Level 2 EV Charger Installation in Matthews, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a turnkey Level 2 EV charger installation in Matthews, NC for Duke Energy - Allumia on February 14, 2025. Led by technician Easton Mitchell, this project included a new 60-amp GFCI breaker, #6 THHN conductors in 3/4” PVC conduit, a short trench run, and full permitting—delivered rebate-ready for Duke Energy’s EV charging program.

If you’re planning a charger install in Matthews, our licensed team designs dedicated, code-compliant circuits that balance safety, performance, and future flexibility.

What We Installed

  • Dedicated 60A GFCI breaker: Provides the required protection for a high-powered Level 2 EV circuit and supports common 40–48A charging equipment when paired with an appropriate EVSE.
  • 3/4” PVC conduit (approx. 20 ft): Durable, clean conduit routing with fittings and terminations sized for the conductor set and environment.
  • #6 THHN conductors (approx. 25 ft): Stranded copper conductors sized for a 60-amp circuit to minimize voltage drop and support continuous charging loads.
  • Trenching and backfill (10 ft): Underground segment installed at an 18–24” standard working depth range with careful backfill to protect the conduit.
  • Charger hookup: Connection for the customer-supplied Level 2 EVSE, either hardwired or via an appropriate receptacle as specified by the device.
  • Electrical helper on site: Ensures an efficient workflow, tidy jobsite, and timely completion.
  • Permit filed with the county: We handled the electrical permit for a compliant installation and clear documentation.

Note on permitting: The included permit covers the electrical scope only. Some projects may need additional non-electrical permits (historic, zoning, septic, etc.), which are not included. If additional approvals are required, we’ll advise you on next steps and can assist with processing for an added fee.

Safety tip: Always call 811 before any digging is performed to locate underground utilities.

Why a 60A GFCI-Protected Circuit for EV Charging?

Level 2 EV chargers draw continuous load, so a properly sized, dedicated circuit is essential. A 60-amp circuit with #6 THHN conductors in 3/4” PVC provides a robust pathway for many residential EVSE models, supporting faster charging and minimizing nuisance trips. GFCI protection at the breaker adds a critical safety layer for garage and outdoor locations, meeting current code requirements and manufacturer guidance.

Duke Energy EV Rebate Ready

For this Matthews installation, we organized the project to be rebate-ready for the Duke Energy EV Charger Rebate, assembling the documentation typically requested—permit details, itemized materials and labor, and clear scope notes. While rebate eligibility and amounts depend on the utility’s current program rules, our team streamlines the process so you can submit with confidence.

  • Itemized scope and material list for clarity
  • Permit information to demonstrate code compliance
  • Photos and closeouts available upon request

If you’re in Matthews, we can review your charger model and location to help align your project with the latest Duke Energy requirements.
