Level 2 EV Charger Install with New Subpanel in Charlotte, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a clean, code-compliant Level 2 EV charging upgrade for customer Lars Rudstam (Duke EV Credit). Lead technician Danny Bishop installed a new exterior subpanel, ran two dedicated 60-amp EV charger circuits into the garage with required safety disconnects, and added a whole-home surge protector to protect the home’s sensitive electronics.

What we installed

Exterior subpanel by the meter: A midsized, outdoor-rated 12/24-space subpanel with capacity up to 125A, providing room for present needs and future expansion.
Feeder and protection: A 100A two-pole breaker with properly sized service-entrance cable to safely feed the new subpanel.
Two 60A Level 2 EV charger circuits: Dedicated 240V, 60-amp runs routed into the garage using appropriately sized 4/3 conductors and 1-inch PVC conduit where required.
Code-required 60A disconnects: Safety disconnect switches located at each EV charging location to meet NEC requirements and simplify future service.
Customer-supplied EVSE hook-up: We completed the appliance connections to get charging online quickly and cleanly.
Whole-home surge protection: A panel-mounted device that diverts damaging voltage spikes from lightning or utility events away from the home’s wiring and equipment. This unit includes a $10,000 warranty against appliance damage in the unlikely event of failure.
Permitting and inspections: We filed the electrical permit and coordinated all required inspections for a smooth, hassle-free experience.

This configuration supports fast Level 2 charging today and leaves capacity in the new subpanel for future circuits or upgrades.

Safe, code-compliant Level 2 charging

High-amperage EV charging demands proper load calculations, conductors, overcurrent protection, and a ready means to disconnect power at the equipment. By installing dedicated 60A circuits and local disconnects at each charging location, we met NEC requirements and made maintenance safer and simpler. Clean routing, firmly mounted conduit, and carefully terminated conductors help ensure efficient charging and long-term reliability.

Duke Energy EV credit support and permitting

For this Charlotte project, our team handled the electrical permit and scheduled the required inspections. We also assisted with the Duke Energy EV credit process by providing documentation and aligning the installation with program requirements where applicable.
