Level 2 EV Charger Installation and Surge Protection in Princeton, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a permitted Level 2 EV charger installation and whole‑home surge protection upgrade for homeowner Tiffany Tereba in Princeton, NC. On February 26, 2025, technician Brad Williams delivered a clean, code-compliant install designed for faster at‑home charging and long‑term protection of the home’s electrical system and appliances.

Project overview

We pulled the required electrical permit, installed a dedicated 240V circuit for the customer‑supplied Level 2 charger, and added a 50A breaker sized to the equipment’s specifications. The run was neatly routed in conduit to protect conductors and maintain an organized, professional finish. We also installed a whole‑home surge protective device to help safeguard the entire residence from voltage spikes caused by lightning events and utility fluctuations.

What we installed

  • Dedicated 240V Level 2 EV charger circuit for faster, reliable at‑home charging
  • 50A standard breaker for the EV circuit
  • Conduit: 20 ft of 3/4" EMT for tidy, durable surface runs
  • Liquidtight flex: 10 ft of 3/4" for vibration and moisture resistance where needed
  • New conductors: approximately 30 ft of #6 SEU and 30 ft of #8 THHN (as required by the application)
  • Whole‑home surge protective device with a $100,000, 10‑year manufacturer warranty on covered equipment

All work was completed in a single coordinated visit, including installing the charger connection (receptacle or hardwire per equipment requirements) and final testing.

How we completed the installation

After verifying panel capacity and optimal charger placement, we routed new conductors in EMT conduit for durability and a clean aesthetic, transitioning to liquidtight flex where appropriate. Connections were torqued to specification, the 50A breaker was installed and labeled, and the EV circuit was tested for correct voltage, grounding, and GFCI functionality when applicable to the equipment.

The surge protective device was mounted at the main electrical panel and properly bonded to provide a low‑impedance path that diverts excess voltage safely to ground. We verified status indicators and documented the installation for the homeowner’s records.

$100k/10‑Year Whole‑Home Surge Protection

Whole‑house surge protection helps prevent damaging over‑voltage from reaching your electrical system and appliances, extending the life of sensitive electronics and major equipment. This installation includes a manufacturer’s $100,000 coverage for 10 years on covered equipment in the unlikely event of protector failure.

Coverage highlights: typical household appliances and hard‑wired devices (when protected by the properly connected SPD) such as washers, dryers, refrigerators/freezers, dishwashers, disposals, stoves, HVAC units located inside the home, wiring, outlets/switches, and breakers. Claims are secondary to your existing insurance policy, and direct lightning strikes are excluded. Security systems and medical equipment are not covered.

Permits and code compliance

We handled the electrical permit for this Princeton project to ensure a safe, code‑compliant installation. Note: every jurisdiction has unique requirements; any non‑electrical permits (historic, environmental/septic, zoning, builder, or other subcontractor permits) are not included. If additional non‑electrical permits are required, we’ll advise on next steps and provide pricing if you want us to process them.

Craftsmanship you can trust

Your project is backed by our SignatureLifetime Craftsmanship Warranty on all work performed, giving you lasting peace of mind alongside reliable home charging and robust surge protection.
