Our Raleigh branch completed a Level 2 EV charger installation and whole-home surge protection for homeowner Elston Miles in Chapel Hill, NC. Performed by technician Brad Williams on January 13, 2025, this project was permitted with the county for a safe, code-compliant upgrade that makes daily charging faster and protects sensitive electronics throughout the home.
Level 2 EV Charger Installation in Chapel Hill
To support reliable Level 2 charging, we installed a dedicated 50A circuit designed specifically for the customer’s EV charging station. The scope included a 50A standard breaker and approximately 30 feet of properly sized #8 SEU wiring to deliver consistent power and minimize voltage drop. This dedicated circuit helps prevent nuisance breaker trips and reduces strain on the home’s electrical system when charging.
Level 2 charging is a major convenience upgrade over standard Level 1 charging. With a dedicated 240V/50A supply, most EV owners enjoy significantly faster charge times, better daily range recovery, and reduced wear on smaller household circuits. We can set up either a hardwired connection or an appropriate receptacle for customer-supplied EV chargers, depending on the manufacturer’s requirements and the home’s layout.
- Dedicated 240V/50A circuit for safe, consistent charging
- 50A breaker and #8 SEU wiring sized to code
- Neat, professional routing to the charger location
- Permitted installation by a licensed electrician
Whole-Home Surge Protection with $100K/10-Year Coverage
We installed a whole-house surge protection device (SPD) at the main panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground. This helps defend against power spikes caused by lightning activity in the area, utility grid fluctuations, or large appliances turning on and off—events that can degrade sensitive electronics over time.
The surge protector includes a $100,000 / 10-year warranty on covered home equipment in the unlikely event of SPD failure, when protected with a properly connected Boltshield SPD. Typical covered equipment includes household appliances such as the washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, HVAC unit located inside the house, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, and a stove with a built-in microwave oven. Security systems and medical equipment are not included and are specifically excluded.
Important notes on coverage:
- All claims are secondary to your existing homeowner’s insurance policy.
- Direct lightning strikes are excluded from coverage.
- Coverage applies only to defined “Covered Equipment” connected and protected as specified.
Adding whole-home surge protection is an excellent companion to EV charging, as it helps safeguard both your charging equipment and other electronics from damaging transients—supporting safer, more reliable power throughout your Chapel Hill home.
Permitting, Compliance, and Craftsmanship
Our team pulled the required electrical permit with the county for this project. Please note: jurisdictions vary in their requirements. The permit included here covers only the electrical scope. If a Historic Preservation, Environmental/Septic, Zoning, separate subcontractor, builder, or other non-electrical permit is required, those items are not included. If additional permits are needed, we’ll let you know which ones to handle, and we can discuss options for assisting with processing as applicable.
Every installation from Touchstone Electric is supported by our SignatureLifetime Craftsmanship Warranty on the work we performed, giving you long-term peace of mind and confidence in the quality of your upgrade.
