EV Charger Installation in Raleigh, NC – Project Overview

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a Level 2 EV charger installation for homeowner Robert Curran in Raleigh, North Carolina. Led by technician Matthew Castello, this project included repurposing existing spa wiring for the new charger circuit, installing a new 60A breaker, filing the required electrical permit, and adding a whole-home surge protector for added protection. Completion date: August 20, 2025.

What We Did

  • Repurposed existing spa wiring: We evaluated the existing spa circuit, verified its condition and suitability, and safely rerouted it to serve the homeowner’s Level 2 EV charging location.
  • Installed a 60A breaker: A new 60-amp breaker was added in the main electrical panel to properly protect the dedicated EV charging circuit.
  • Filed the electrical permit: Our Raleigh branch handled the electrical permit with the county to ensure the installation meets inspection and code requirements.
  • Added a whole-home surge protector: Installed at the main panel to help guard the home’s electrical system and connected electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
  • System testing and labeling: We performed function checks on the charger circuit, verified correct polarity and grounding, and labeled the new breaker for clarity.

Why Level 2 Charging

A Level 2 EV charger uses a dedicated 240V circuit to deliver faster, more convenient at-home charging. For many Raleigh homeowners, a dedicated breaker and appropriately sized wiring ensure safe, reliable performance that aligns with charger manufacturer specifications and electrical code.

By utilizing an existing spa circuit that met the requirements, our team minimized disruption while delivering a clean, code-compliant installation that’s ready for daily use.

Permitting and Code Compliance

As part of this project, Touchstone Electric filed the electrical permit and coordinated work to meet local inspection standards. Requirements for non-electrical permits can vary by jurisdiction; when needed, those are addressed separately. Our Raleigh electricians follow the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local amendments to help ensure safety and long-term reliability.

Whole-Home Surge Protection

With more sensitive electronics and major appliances in today’s homes, a panel-mounted surge protector is a smart add-on to any EV charger installation. The device helps divert excess voltage from lightning-related surges and utility fluctuations, reducing the risk of damage to chargers, HVAC systems, appliances, and other electronics.

Duke Energy Rebate Readiness

To support the homeowner’s utility incentive application, our team prepared an itemized invoice for the Duke Energy EV charger rebate program. Clear documentation helps streamline the submission process so Raleigh customers can pursue available savings where applicable.

PowerCare Membership Benefits

For added peace of mind, the homeowner enrolled in our PowerCare Membership, which includes ongoing value such as:

  • Lifetime craftsmanship warranty on our work.
  • $0 yearly safety check on key electrical safety devices and the main panel.
  • $0 annual panel tune-up, including re-tensioning lugs, applying antioxidant, cleaning, and resealing penetrations.
