Our Raleigh branch completed a permitted Level 2 EV charger and whole‑home surge protector installation for homeowner Mark Messmer in Wake Forest, NC. What We Installed
- Electrical permit pulled and closed with the local authority having jurisdiction to ensure a fully inspected, code‑compliant installation.
- 60A Level 2 EV charger installation (customer‑supplied unit), mounted and connected for reliable home charging.
- Dedicated 60A breaker added for the EVSE to provide proper overcurrent protection and performance.
- #6 SEU (3‑wire) cable, approximately 35 feet, routed for a clean, efficient feeder run to the charger location.
- Conduit runs including about 20 feet of 3/4" PVC and 10 feet of 3/4" liquid‑tight flexible conduit with fittings and connectors as applicable.
- Whole‑home surge protection system installed at the main electrical panel to divert excess voltage safely to ground.
Every component was selected and installed to meet applicable electrical code and the EV charger’s specifications, helping ensure dependable, fast Level 2 charging at home.
Why Add Whole‑Home Surge Protection?
Whole‑house surge protectors help safeguard wiring, breakers, outlets/switches, and hardwired equipment from voltage spikes that can occur from lightning nearby, grid fluctuations, or large appliances cycling on and off. Reducing repetitive surge exposure can extend the lifespan of appliances and sensitive electronics throughout the home.
This project included a surge protector with a $100,000 equipment coverage / 10‑year warranty in the unlikely case of failure. Per the manufacturer’s terms provided with this project:
- Claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy.
- Direct lightning strikes are excluded.
- Covered Equipment may include common household appliances and hard‑wired devices when protected by a properly connected SPD; security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
Installing the SPD at the main electrical panel gives whole‑home protection and complements point‑of‑use protection where needed.
Permit Notes for Wake Forest Homeowners
This project included the electrical permit. Some jurisdictions require additional permits for certain scopes of work (for example, historic, environmental/septic, zoning, or general building permits). If additional non‑electrical permits are required, we’ll identify them and can either guide you to handle them directly or provide a separate price to process and file those permits.
