EV Charger Readiness and Subpanel Installation in Charlotte, NC
Our Charlotte branch (Matthews) completed a Level 2 EV charging prep project for a local homeowner with support from Duke Energy – Allumia. Led by technician Gump Martin, the team installed a new indoor subpanel, ran dedicated feeders with PVC conduit, and prepared the home’s electrical system for a future Level 2 EV charger. All permitting was coordinated through Duke Energy, and the applicable rebate was applied to the project. Completion date: September 26, 2024.
What We Installed
- Mid-sized indoor subpanel (12/24 up to 125A): Provides dedicated capacity for EV charging and room for future circuits without overloading the main panel.
- Feeder to subpanel using SER #2 (4-wire): A 100-amp service entrance cable delivers reliable, code-compliant power to the new subpanel.
- THHN #4 conductors in 1-1/2" PVC conduit: A neat, protected pathway that’s ready to serve a dedicated Level 2 EV charging circuit.
- Clean labeling and code compliance: Proper neutral/ground separation in the subpanel, torqueing to spec, and tidy routing for long-term safety and serviceability.
This configuration prepares the home for a future Level 2 EV charger—whether you choose a hardwired EVSE or a NEMA 14-50 style receptacle—without major panel upgrades later.
Permitting and Duke Energy Rebate
Touchstone Electric handled the Duke Energy permit from start to finish and ensured the installation followed local and NEC requirements. Once the work was completed and verified, the Duke Energy EV rebate was applied to help offset eligible project costs. Our team coordinates these steps so you can move from planning to charging with minimal hassle.
Why Add a Subpanel for EV Charging?
- Capacity where you need it: A dedicated subpanel provides space and amperage for EV charging without crowding your main panel.
- Future ready: Easily add circuits for another EV, a workshop, or outdoor power later on.
- Cleaner installation: Shorter wire runs and protected conduit routes help keep the installation neat and efficient.
- Code compliance: Proper grounding, bonding, and conductor sizing help ensure safe operation and smoother inspections.
