Electrical Panel Upgrade & Surge Protection in Knightdale, NC
Our Raleigh team completed a permitted and inspected 200-amp main electrical panel upgrade with whole-home surge protection for a homeowner in Knightdale, NC. Led by technician Cody Perry, this project modernized the home’s service equipment, improved safety, and added robust protection against damaging power surges. Completed on January 16, 2026, the work is backed by our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty.
Project Highlights
- Replaced the main 200A panel with an aluminum bus model featuring a 20-year transferable manufacturer warranty.
- Installed a whole-home surge protector with $50,000 of coverage and a 10-year term.
- Pulled the required permit and coordinated inspection with the local authority.
- Replaced multiple standard breakers to align with current standards and labeling requirements.
- Used THHN 2/0 conductors for 200-amp feeder applications as needed.
- Included Touchstone Electric’s Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty for lasting peace of mind.
What We Did
After pulling the permit, we safely de-energized the service, made a generator available for limited power during the outage, and removed the existing panel. The new 200-amp panel was set, grounded, and bonded to meet current code requirements. We reconnected the service entrance conductors and all existing branch circuits, then clearly labeled the new panel for easier future maintenance and troubleshooting.
We replaced a range of standard breakers to match the home’s loads, including 15A and 20A branch circuits and several two-pole breakers serving larger appliances and a subpanel. To protect the entire home from transient voltage spikes, we installed a whole-home surge protective device (SPD) at the main panel. The SPD diverts excess voltage to ground during events such as lightning-related surges, power grid fluctuations, or equipment cycling, helping to extend the life of appliances and electronics.
Code and Safety Considerations
As inspectors increasingly enforce NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may need AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. In a few cases, existing wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—can cause nuisance tripping when AFCI protection is added and may require additional diagnostic time to resolve. Our Raleigh electricians evaluate these conditions carefully and recommend the most reliable path to both compliance and safety.
Why This Upgrade Matters for Knightdale Homes
- Safety and compliance: Proper grounding, bonding, and modern overcurrent protection reduce fire and shock risks.
- Capacity for today’s loads: A 200A panel better supports HVAC, kitchen appliances, tools, and future additions like EV chargers or spas.
- Whole-home protection: The SPD shields sensitive electronics and appliances from everyday surges that can quietly shorten their lifespan.
- Clear labeling and organization: A tidy, labeled panel simplifies maintenance and speeds up future service calls.
Warranties and Coverage
This Knightdale upgrade is covered by our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty. The selected aluminum-bus panel includes a 20-year transferable manufacturer warranty, and the installed surge protector offers $50,000 of appliance coverage for 10 years. Note: SPD claims are typically secondary to your homeowner’s insurance and generally exclude direct lightning strikes; certain items (such as security systems and medical equipment) may not be covered under the SPD manufacturer’s policy.
