Kitchen GFCI & Outlet Upgrades by Touchstone Electric in Charlotte, NC
Completed on May 22, 2025, this project for Huntington Builders modernized critical power and lighting points throughout a Charlotte home. Led by technician Will Cruz from our Charlotte team (Matthews branch), the work focused on safer, code‑conscious Outlets & Switches improvements, new lighting controls, and a humidity‑sensing bathroom fan for healthier indoor air.
What We Upgraded
- Sink area GFCI protection: Removed the counter receptacle to the right of the sink and rewired the left-side outlet to be a GFCI, providing ground-fault protection where water is present.
- Under‑sink power: Installed a quad receptacle under the sink with GFCI protection—ideal for a disposer, dishwasher, or filtration equipment while keeping safety at the forefront.
- Kitchen island receptacle: Ran new wiring and added a receptacle on the side of the island for convenient small‑appliance use and charging.
- Switching and lighting layout: Replaced a 2‑gang box with a 3‑gang box to accommodate additional switches and rewired the under‑counter lights to their new location for cleaner control and usability.
- Back counter receptacle relocation: Moved a counter outlet down and rotated it horizontally—helpful for backsplash finishes and improved plug clearance.
- Bathroom ventilation: Installed the customer‑supplied bathroom exhaust fan and added a humidity sensor for automatic operation when moisture rises, helping to reduce odors, condensation, and potential mold growth.
- New wall sconces: Added three wall sconce boxes and a dedicated switch, setting the stage for layered lighting and accent illumination.
- Durable conductors: Pulled approximately 35 feet of MC 12/3 for 20‑amp circuits to support the new loads and switching needs.

GFCI protection by sinks helps reduce shock risk, while a properly placed kitchen island receptacle makes everyday cooking more convenient. In the bathroom, a humidity‑sensing fan activates automatically when moisture levels rise, helping protect finishes and improve comfort with no extra steps. Across the project, using 20‑amp‑rated wiring and updating device locations supports reliable performance with a clean, finished look.
