Kitchen Circuits, Breakers & Lighting Installation in Charlotte, NC
Completed: July 25, 2025 | Technician: Christian Cedillos | Branch: Charlotte (Matthews-based)
Our Charlotte team delivered a code-safe kitchen electrical upgrade for homeowner Billy Martin, adding dedicated appliance circuits, modern GFCI/AFCI protection, and efficient LED lighting. This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Circuit Breaker Repair & Replacement services.
Project Overview
We installed new, dedicated circuits directly from the main panel to support today’s higher-demand kitchen appliances and to meet current electrical code. The scope covered small-appliance circuits, dedicated appliance feeds, lighting, and comprehensive breaker protection, all permit-ready for county inspection.
What We Upgraded
- Dedicated small-appliance circuits: Two independent 20A circuits for countertop receptacles to reduce overloads and improve safety.
- Appliance-specific circuits: Dedicated circuits for the refrigerator and dishwasher to ensure reliable operation and clear load separation.
- Cooktop power: New 40A, 240V circuit for the electric cooktop using appropriately sized cable for stable, code-compliant performance.
- Hood vent circuit: A separate circuit to keep the ventilation system dependable and quiet under load.
- Lighting circuit with AFCI: A new arc-fault protected lighting circuit to enhance protection against arc-related hazards.
- Obsolete circuit removal: We safely removed a no-longer-needed 40A microwave/oven combo circuit.
- Rework and separation: We carefully separated legacy ties so unrelated areas continued to operate exactly as before.
- New lighting and devices: Installed six recessed can lights, six standard outlets, two GFCI outlets, and two new switches for convenient control.
Code-Safe Breaker Protection
To align with current electrical standards, we added the appropriate combination of GFCI, AFCI, and standard breakers at the panel. Kitchens require GFCI protection in specific locations and AFCI protection for many 120V branch circuits. Our installation reflects these requirements while keeping nuisance trips to a minimum.
Note on AFCIs: Arc-fault breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may require additional diagnosis to resolve. Our team plans for this possibility to keep your system safe and dependable.
Materials and Devices Installed
- 200 ft NM-B 12/2 cable for 20A kitchen circuits and outlets
- 50 ft NM-B 14/2 cable for lighting runs
- 45 ft NM-B 8/3 cable for the 40A, 240V cooktop circuit
- 1 × 40A standard breaker (cooktop)
- 2 × 20A standard breakers (dedicated appliances as appropriate)
- 2 × 20A GFCI breakers (kitchen receptacle protection where required)
- 1 × 15A standard breaker (lighting/branch where applicable)
- 1 × 15A AFCI breaker (arc-fault protection for lighting circuit)
- 6 × standard receptacles with covers
- 2 × GFCI receptacles with covers
- 2 × standard light switches
- 6 × recessed can lights
Permitting and Inspection-Ready
We filed the electrical permit with the county so the work is ready for inspection. If a project requires non-electrical permits (such as zoning or historic approvals), those are separate from the electrical permit. We’ll advise you on any additional requirements and can provide pricing to process those if needed.
