Kitchen Circuit Repair and GFCI Outlet Installation in Raleigh, NC

Our Raleigh branch was called to a home in Raleigh, NC where several kitchen outlets had lost power. On February 25, 2025, technician Brad Williams diagnosed the issue and restored safe, reliable power by splicing the existing circuit, running new wire to the first outlet in line, and installing a code-compliant GFCI receptacle to protect the entire downstream run.

What We Found and Fixed

The first outlet on the circuit was not delivering power to the rest of the kitchen receptacles. To correct the fault and bring the circuit up to modern safety expectations, we:

  • Spliced into the existing kitchen circuit at the appropriate location to provide a reliable feed.
  • Ran new NM-B 12/2 Romex (10 ft) to the first outlet in line, ensuring proper ampacity for a 20-amp kitchen circuit.
  • Installed a GFCI receptacle at the first outlet position so that downstream outlets receive ground-fault protection.
  • Tested the circuit to confirm restored power, proper wiring polarity, and GFCI trip/reset functionality.

By addressing the circuit at the first outlet, we were able to restore power to the previously inactive kitchen outlets and provide enhanced protection where water and appliances are frequently used.

Materials and Equipment Used

  • 1x GFCI Receptacle — Installed with cover for code-compliant ground-fault protection in the kitchen.
  • 10 ft NM-B Romex 12/2 — Suitable for 20-amp kitchen circuits powering appliances and countertop outlets; included any necessary junction box for the splice.

GFCI protection is required in kitchens to help reduce the risk of shock. Placing the GFCI at the first outlet position allows the remaining receptacles on the load side to share that protection.
