Project overview in Kannapolis, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive 200A electrical panel upgrade and breaker replacement for Dylan Chapman in Kannapolis, NC on August 28, 2024. The project centered on installing a new outdoor 200A main panel with an aluminum bus, removing an aging indoor subpanel, consolidating all circuits into the new service equipment, and adding whole-home surge protection.
This Panels & Service Upgrades project (Electrical Panel Upgrades) enhances capacity, improves safety, and brings the home’s service equipment up to current code for long-term reliability.
What we upgraded
- Outdoor 200A aluminum-bus main panel: Installed and brought to current electrical code, including labeling, grounding, and bonding. The panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty.
- Subpanel removal and circuit consolidation: We removed the indoor subpanel and combined circuits into the new outdoor main panel for a cleaner, more serviceable layout.
- Service reconnections: Reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits with neat, organized terminations.
- Whole-home surge protection: Added protection at the service equipment, including a device with up to $10,000 connected equipment warranty coverage.
- Permitting and inspection: All work performed with proper permits and scheduled for inspection.
- Limited-power support during outage: To minimize downtime during the panel swap, Touchstone Electric made a generator available for limited power usage.
Breaker replacements and circuit sizing
To align with equipment loads and today’s code standards, we replaced and right-sized multiple breakers during the upgrade. This fine-tuning improves protection, reduces nuisance trips, and supports consistent performance.
- 1x 45A breaker installed in place of an existing 40A where required.
- 1x 35A double‑pole breaker replacing a 30A double‑pole.
- 2x 30A double‑pole standard breakers.
- 3x 20A double‑pole standard breakers (replacing existing 25A double‑poles).
- 3x 20A single‑pole standard breakers.
- 2x 15A double‑pole standard breakers.
- 6x 15A single‑pole standard breakers.
All breakers were installed to manufacturer specifications with proper torque and labeling for clear identification and easier future service.
Why choose an outdoor 200A aluminum-bus panel?
- Capacity and headroom: 200A service supports today’s high-demand appliances and future additions.
- Durable, code-compliant design: Weather-rated outdoor equipment, updated grounding and bonding, and organized circuit layout enhance safety.
- Aluminum bus value: Modern, code-approved bus construction paired with a 20-year transferable panel warranty offers solid performance and peace of mind.
- Surge protection at the source: Whole-home protection helps safeguard HVAC, appliances, and electronics from damaging voltage spikes, with up to $10,000 warranty coverage on connected equipment.
