Project overview: hot tub wiring and spa panel in Columbus, NC
Our Hendersonville branch completed a specialty hot tub electrical project for Douglas Gruschow in Columbus, NC. The goal was to provide safe, dedicated power for a new spa while keeping the shop and shed neat, code-compliant, and easy to service. This Pool & Hot Tub Electrical job was handled by our Asheville business unit team.
Technicians Devin Aycock and Frank Fragale performed the work and wrapped the project on 2025-10-21.
What we installed
- 30A spa panel in the shop: Dedicated panel to serve the hot tub equipment with clear labeling for serviceability.
- 30A double‑pole breaker: Proper overcurrent protection to feed the spa panel.
- Pull‑out equipment disconnect (≤60A): Code-required power shutoff to isolate the hot tub equipment during maintenance.
- 10/3 NM‑B wiring (25 ft): Heavy‑duty copper cable sized for a 30‑amp, 240‑volt circuit to support spa equipment demand.
- New flex to the shed (1-inch): Clean, protected pathway for both circuits to the outbuilding.
- Liquidtight/flex conduit (3/4-inch, 15 ft): Durable, moisture‑resistant conduit for exposed sections and transitions.
- Trenching (8 ft, 18–24 inches deep): Underground routing at appropriate depth to safeguard conductors. Homeowners should contact 811 to locate utilities before digging.
- Shop ceiling upgrades: Installed a plug for the switch leg in the shop room and mounted a customer‑supplied ceiling fan/light on the existing box and circuit.
All materials and equipment were selected for reliability and installed with clear pathways so future service is straightforward and safe.
Why this installation matters
- Dedicated power for the spa: The 30‑amp circuit and spa panel give the hot tub the capacity it needs without overloading other circuits.
- Safe service shutoff: The pull‑out disconnect provides a fast, visible means to isolate power for maintenance.
- Durable routing: Liquidtight/flex conduit protects conductors against moisture and movement, ideal for sheds and outdoor transitions.
- Neat, code‑minded workmanship: Trenching depth, proper conductor sizing, and labeled components support safety and longevity.
- Comfort add‑ons: The fan/light install and switch‑leg plug improve usability of the shop without adding new circuits.
