Touchstone Electric completed a code-compliant hot tub electrical installation for homeowners Tony & Anthony Pariti in Terrell, NC. On July 14, 2024, our Charlotte team operating from the Matthews branch installed a dedicated 240V, 50-amp spa circuit with proper grounding, an emergency disconnect in line-of-sight, and a compliant convenience receptacle location. We handled permitting with the local authority and coordinated inspections to ensure the installation meets current electrical codes.
What we installed
- Dedicated 240V 50A circuit: Purpose-built supply for the hot tub to support start-up and running loads without burdening other home circuits.
- Emergency disconnect: Mounted more than 5 feet from the unit but within clear line-of-sight for fast, safe shutoff during maintenance or emergencies.
- Equipment grounding: Bonded from the manufacturer’s grounding lug using an insulated grounding conductor to reduce shock risk and meet code.
- Code-compliant receptacle placement: Installed between 6–20 feet from the unit to keep cords away from splash zones while remaining convenient for accessories and service tools.
- Permitting and inspections: We filed the electrical trade permit and scheduled all relevant inspections for a smooth, hassle-free closeout.
Materials and workmanship details
To ensure reliable performance, we outfitted the system with a new 50-amp standard breaker and ran appropriately sized conductors for the hot tub feeder and associated circuits. The team utilized:
- 1x 50A standard breaker for the service panel.
- THHN conductors: approximately 70 ft of #6, 45 ft of #10, and 45 ft of #12 for dedicated runs and terminations as required by the installation layout.
- Skilled crew support: Four electrician wiremen provided the additional labor needed to complete the project efficiently and safely.
- Site restoration: A custom task to mix and pour concrete restored the sections needed inside the trench after electrical work was completed.
The base scope for hot tub power does not include trenching or conduit; any wiring needs and surface restoration are addressed through separate line items, ensuring the final installation is both safe and neatly finished.
