Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team (serving the Monroe, NC area from our Matthews branch) completed a specialty pool and hot tub electrical project for homeowner Jen Govero. On June 21, 2024, technician Jake Keele led the installation of an outdoor subpanel, a dedicated 240V hot tub circuit with GFCI protection and emergency disconnect, underground conduit and trenching, plus new indoor and outdoor outlets.

Project highlights

  • Outdoor subpanel (12/24, up to 125A): Set up with a new 100A 2-pole breaker feeding the subpanel to support the hot tub and future circuits.
  • Dedicated 240V hot tub circuit (50/60A): Installed per manufacturer and code requirements, including an emergency disconnect located over 5 ft from the unit but within sight, and grounding from the manufacturer’s designated lug.
  • GFCI protection where required: Included a GFCI receptacle positioned between 6–20 ft from the hot tub for convenience, a 15A GFCI breaker for general-use safety, and a 20A 2-pole GFCI breaker for dedicated equipment protection.
  • Underground power to the equipment area: Approximately 55 ft of trenching at 18–24 inches depth with 3/4" PVC conduit and about 60 ft of feeder cable to the new outdoor subpanel.
  • Equipment mounting solution: A double wood post assembly set in concrete to provide a sturdy, code-compliant mounting surface for outdoor electrical components.
  • Weatherproof outdoor outlet: Installed a receptacle with a bubble cover for in-use protection.
  • Added indoor/outdoor receptacles: Included standard and additional GFCI outlets as needed for safety and convenience.
  • New branch wiring: Ran NM-B 14/2 for 15-amp general lighting/outlets and NM-B 12/2 for 20-amp circuits to support the new receptacles and loads.
  • Permitting and inspections: Filed the necessary electrical trade permit and coordinated required inspections with the local authority.
  • Skilled crew support: Additional wireman assistance ensured an efficient, tidy installation.
  • Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold: Enrollment includes checks for smoke/CO detectors, panel safety, code updates, and identification of loose or deteriorated connections.

Safety and code-focused details

For hot tubs and spas, correct GFCI protection and equipment placement are critical. Our team provided GFCI protection for both the hot tub circuit and nearby receptacles, installed the emergency disconnect at the proper distance and line of sight, and grounded the unit per the manufacturer’s instructions. Underground wiring was protected in PVC conduit at the appropriate burial depth to safeguard the feeder to the new subpanel.

Before trenching, utility locate requirements were addressed in line with 811 guidelines. The result is a clean, durable installation designed with safety, reliability, and future expansion in mind.
