Hot Tub Circuit Installation & Surge Protection in Rock Hill, SC

On March 26, 2024, our Charlotte team from the Matthews branch completed a specialty Pool & Hot Tub Electrical project for Brian Smith in Rock Hill. The scope included a dedicated 240V hot tub circuit with a 60A emergency disconnect, a whole-home surge protector, and a comprehensive electrical safety check.

Technicians on site: Christian Cedillos, Theo Coetsee, and Danny Bishop.

What We Installed

  • Dedicated 240V hot tub circuit: Installed a 50/60A circuit tailored for the spa, using #4 THHN conductors and proper terminations to ensure reliable performance.
  • 60A outdoor emergency disconnect: Mounted more than 5 feet from the unit and within line of sight for safe, code-compliant shutoff during maintenance or emergencies.
  • Correct equipment grounding: Bonded the spa using the manufacturer’s grounding lug and an insulated equipment grounding conductor for safety and code compliance.
  • Convenience receptacle placement: Installed a receptacle between 6–20 feet from the spa location, meeting placement requirements for outdoor spa installations.
  • Whole-home surge protector: Added surge protection at the main electrical panel to help divert excess voltage from lightning, grid fluctuations, or large appliance cycles—helping protect devices and extend the lifespan of home electronics.
  • Appropriately sized 2‑pole breaker: Installed and labeled the correct breaker to support the dedicated circuit and ensure safe operation.

Safety and Compliance Steps

  • Permits and inspections: Filed the necessary electrical trade permit and scheduled the required inspection(s) with the local authority.
  • Code-aligned installation: Verified panel capacity, conductor sizing, disconnect location, and receptacle placement in line with code and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Annual Home Safety Membership – Gold: Performed a safety check that included testing smoke/CO detectors, reviewing panel safety, noting applicable code updates, tightening loose/worn/deteriorated connections, and sealing connectors where needed.
