Completed 150A Electrical Panel Upgrade in High Point, NC

Our Charlotte branch team completed a 150A indoor main panel replacement for homeowner Casey Moser Marino in High Point, NC on April 18, 2025. The existing panel had limited space and visible discoloration on the bus bar, so we upgraded the equipment, corrected grounding and bonding, added whole-home surge protection, and brought the installation in line with current electrical code.

This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services, delivered by our Matthews-based team serving the High Point area.

What We Upgraded

  • New 150A Indoor Main Panel (Aluminum bus): Removed the aging panel and installed a modern, code-compliant panel. We reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits, bonded and grounded the panel, and provided clear circuit labeling for safety and convenience.
  • Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a premium device to protect sensitive electronics and major appliances from power surges, with a $10k warranty on the surge protector.
  • Grounding System Improvements: Drove new ground rods and ran the grounding electrode conductor to the main service equipment, ensuring secure, code-approved connections for a safer fault path and enhanced lightning/surge performance.
  • Permitting and Inspection: We handled the required permits and coordinated inspection so the upgrade meets current standards in High Point, NC.
  • Temporary Power Options: A generator was available for limited power during the brief outage required to swap the panel.

Breakers Installed and Circuits Served

To optimize protection and load management, we installed new breakers matched to the home’s equipment and usage:

  • 1 × 50A standard breaker: Commonly used for ranges, larger heaters, small subpanels, or EV chargers.
  • 1 × 30A double-pole breaker: Typical for dryers, water heaters, air condensers, spas, or EV equipment.
  • 1 × 25A double-pole breaker: Often selected for small condensers, well pumps, or compact mini-splits.
  • 1 × 15A double-pole breaker: Dedicated small appliance or specialty loads.
  • 7 × 20A standard breakers: Ideal for kitchen and general-purpose small-appliance circuits.
  • 5 × 15A standard breakers: Lighting and general branch circuits, including bathroom lighting per 2020 code guidance.

Each breaker was sized to the connected load and wired to manufacturer specifications for reliable performance and improved safety.

Why This Upgrade Matters

  • Eliminates unsafe conditions: Replacing a panel with a discolored bus bar reduces the risk of overheating and arcing.
  • Adds capacity and organization: Properly sized breakers and updated labeling make future maintenance safer and simpler.
  • Enhances protection: Whole-home surge protection helps safeguard appliances, HVAC equipment, and electronics.
  • Brings wiring up to code: Grounding, bonding, and panel terminations follow current standards for High Point, NC.

Note: As inspectors continue implementing NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI upgrades on certain circuits. If an inspector requests AFCI protection and shared neutrals are present, additional troubleshooting may be needed to isolate circuits and prevent nuisance tripping. Our team advises homeowners on the best path forward when these scenarios arise.
