150A Electrical Panel Upgrade in Hickory, NC

On September 10, 2024, our Charlotte branch completed a 150A main electrical panel upgrade for homeowner Devan Jordheim in Hickory, NC. Led by technician Josh Key, the project brought the home’s service equipment up to current code, improved safety, and added surge protection for sensitive electronics and appliances.

To minimize downtime, we coordinated power shutoff and made a generator available for limited power during the panel change-out. After installation, Devan praised our team with a review recognizing the quality of our work and communication throughout the process.

Scope of Work and Installed Components

  • Main Panel Replacement (150A, Indoor, Aluminum): Removed the existing equipment and installed a new 150A panel. We grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and reconnected/labeled the existing branch circuits to current standards.
  • New Breakers Installed:
    • 8 × 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
    • 2 × 15A standard breakers for bathroom lighting (2020 code compliant) and general branch circuits
    • 1 × 30A double‑pole breaker suitable for a dryer, water heater, A/C condenser, spa, or EV charger
  • Wiring Upgrades: 30 ft of NM‑B 10/2 Romex installed for 30A circuits serving larger appliances.
  • Whole‑Home Surge Protection: Added a surge protector with a $10,000 warranty to help guard the home’s electrical system and connected devices from voltage spikes.
  • Permitting and Inspection: We filed the county electrical permit and coordinated the inspection to close out the project.

Code and Safety Upgrades You Can Count On

Bringing the panel to current electrical code helps reduce nuisance tripping, overheating, and other hazards. Our team ensured proper grounding and bonding, clean circuit labeling for easier troubleshooting, and breaker sizing that matches the connected loads. The installed aluminum main panel includes a 20‑year transferable warranty (our copper panel option carries a 50‑year warranty for those seeking an upgrade path).

  • Up‑to‑date protection for bathroom lighting and small appliance circuits
  • Correct breaker configurations for dedicated 30A appliances
  • Enhanced surge defense for the entire home
  • Clear labeling to streamline future maintenance

Permits, Inspections, and What’s Included

Touchstone Electric handled the electrical permit and inspection for this panel upgrade in Hickory. Every jurisdiction can have different requirements; this project’s permit scope covered the electrical work only. If a future project requires separate non‑electrical approvals (such as zoning, historic, septic, or builder permits), we’ll identify what’s needed and either provide guidance for homeowner submission or offer pricing to process those additional permits on your behalf.
