Completed Hardwired Smoke & CO Detector Installation in Charlotte, NC

On November 14, 2024, our Charlotte team, operating from our Matthews branch, completed a comprehensive smoke and carbon monoxide detector installation for homeowner Teresa Coker in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Steve Goheen, this project delivered a modern, code-conscious safety upgrade designed to protect sleeping areas and common spaces throughout the home.

The scope included a new interconnected, hardwired detector network and a dedicated AFCI breaker to align with current NEC safety requirements for new wiring and life-safety circuits.

What We Installed

  • Three hardwired smoke detectors — one in each bedroom for direct protection where people sleep
  • One hardwired smoke/CO combo detector — located on the first floor for whole-home carbon monoxide coverage
  • One hardwired smoke/CO combo detector — placed in the second-floor hallway to protect the primary egress from bedrooms
  • New Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) breaker — added to the electrical panel to meet NEC-driven arc-fault protection for the new circuit
  • System interconnection — so that when one alarm senses a hazard, all alarms sound together

This layout follows best-practice placement for comprehensive coverage: smoke alarms in each bedroom and hallway outside sleeping areas, plus carbon monoxide monitoring on living levels. Interconnection ensures the entire household is alerted at the first sign of smoke or CO.

Why This Matters for Your Home

  • Faster, whole-home alerts: Interconnected alarms notify everyone simultaneously, buying precious time to exit safely.
  • Targeted CO protection: CO is odorless and invisible. Combo detectors on the first floor and second-floor hallway help protect both living and sleeping zones.
  • Bedroom coverage: Installing smoke detectors in each bedroom aligns with modern safety recommendations for nighttime protection.
  • AFCI fire prevention: The new AFCI breaker adds an important layer of defense against arc faults, a known cause of electrical fires.
  • Up-to-date with code: The system was designed to align with NEC requirements for new wiring and life-safety devices.

Our Installation Approach

Steve carefully evaluated existing wiring paths, installed new cabling for the interconnected network, and terminated each device to manufacturer specifications. After adding and labeling the AFCI breaker, he completed function testing to confirm power, interconnect signaling, and alarm audibility across the home. The result is a clean, reliable installation that integrates with the home’s electrical system while prioritizing safety and code compliance.
