GFCI Outlet Installation for Sump Pumps and Dehumidifiers in Pickens, SC

Touchstone Electric recently completed a code-compliant GFCI outlet installation in Pickens, SC, supporting moisture-control equipment for Carolina Foundation Solutions. From our Greenville branch, our Taylors-based team provided a safe, durable power solution for two sump pumps and two dehumidifiers—essential equipment in basements, crawlspaces, and other damp areas.

Technicians Aaron Smith and Tyler Harris completed the work on January 22, 2026, delivering clean workmanship and reliable protection where it matters most.

Project Overview

The scope included four new GFCI-protected receptacles: two dedicated to sump pumps and two serving dehumidifiers. To ensure long-term durability and a neat, serviceable installation, we used THHN conductors in EMT metal conduit and pulled an electrical permit for full compliance with local code.

What We Installed

  • Four GFCI receptacles with in-use covers, providing personal protection and equipment safety in damp locations.
  • THHN #12 conductors (approximately 125 feet) for robust 20-amp branch circuits sized appropriately for pumps and dehumidifiers.
  • 3/4-inch EMT conduit (approximately 100 feet), including proper connectors, straps, and LBs for a professional, protected raceway.
  • Bolt-in breakers added as required to supply the new circuits with correct overcurrent protection.
  • Electrical permit obtained and closed out through the county for a documented, inspected installation.

An additional electrician wireman assisted to expedite pulling conductors, setting devices, and coordinating with the permitting process.

Why GFCI Protection Matters for Pumps and Dehumidifiers

GFCI outlets are designed to trip quickly when they detect a ground fault, reducing shock hazards in wet or damp environments. For sump pumps and dehumidifiers, GFCI protection adds a layer of safety while helping the equipment operate reliably on properly sized, dedicated circuits.

  • Safer in damp locations: Ideal for basements, crawlspaces, and utility rooms.
  • Equipment-ready: Dehumidifiers and pumps draw higher current at startup; 20-amp circuits with #12 wiring support these loads.
  • Neat, serviceable installation: EMT conduit keeps wiring protected and organized for future maintenance.

Code Compliance and Permitting

Our Greenville branch handled the permitting to ensure a fully inspected installation in Pickens. We follow current electrical code for conductor sizing, GFCI protection, and proper support and termination of EMT conduit and fittings.

Note: The permit included for this project is the electrical permit. If additional non-electrical permits (such as zoning, historic preservation, or environmental) are required by a jurisdiction, they are not included. If we encounter any such requirements, we’ll advise on what’s needed and can provide pricing to process additional permits if requested.
