Project overview

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a GFCI outlet installation and wiring upgrade for YMCA of the Triangle in Raleigh, NC. Led by technician Cody Perry, the project was finished on December 17, 2024, and is backed by our lifetime craftsmanship warranty on the work performed. The goal was to provide safe, durable, and code-compliant power where it’s needed most.

We coordinated with the facility’s point of contact to confirm locations and routing, then installed new GFCI protection and robust wiring methods for long-term reliability.

Scope of work completed

  • Installed four GFCI receptacles with covers for enhanced personnel protection.
  • Routed new branch-circuit conductors using a combination of EMT metal conduit and MC 12/2 cable for a clean, protected installation.
  • Pulled approximately 20 ft of THHN #12 conductors to support 20-amp loads as specified.
  • Installed and secured 10 ft of 1/2-inch EMT conduit with the appropriate fittings and supports.
  • Utilized 100 ft of MC 12/2 cable to complete safe, efficient routing where conduit was not required.
  • Assigned an additional Electrician Wireman for the day to keep the project on schedule and minimize disruption.

The new outlets were tied into the appropriate 20-amp branch-circuit wiring per the plan, providing reliable power while maintaining a tidy, professional finish.

Why GFCI protection matters

Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets monitor electrical flow and quickly shut off power when an imbalance is detected. They are a key safety feature in areas where moisture or frequent equipment use increases risk. Installing GFCIs helps reduce shock hazards and aligns with current electrical standards and local code requirements in Raleigh, NC.

  • Enhanced safety: Rapid shutoff helps protect people from electrical shock.
  • Code-focused installation: Placement and wiring follow today’s standards for kitchens, bathrooms, utility spaces, break areas, and similar locations.
  • Easy testing: Built-in test and reset buttons make routine safety checks simple.

Materials and methods you can trust

For this project, our Raleigh electricians used durable materials selected for the environment and application:

  • GFCI receptacles: Provide life-safety protection with convenient test/reset.
  • EMT metal conduit (1/2-inch): Protects conductors in exposed areas and maintains a neat, secure appearance.
  • THHN #12 conductors: Suitable for 20-amp branch circuits, pulled within EMT as required.
  • MC 12/2 cable: Commercial-grade cable offering strength and flexibility where conduit isn’t necessary.

Careful planning and clear routing ensure the new wiring is protected, identifiable, and serviceable for future needs.

Results for YMCA of the Triangle

The facility now has four new, strategically located GFCI outlets with cleanly routed wiring, supporting everyday use and future growth. The combination of EMT and MC wiring methods provides long-lasting protection in high-traffic areas, while the 20-amp conductors support typical equipment and appliance loads.

As with all workmanship performed on this project, our lifetime craftsmanship warranty provides peace of mind for the client and underscores our commitment to quality.
