Professional GFCI Outlet and Sump Pump Circuit Install in Greenville, SC

Touchstone Electric’s Greenville team, based out of our Taylors branch, completed a dedicated sump pump power solution and outlet upgrades for Bobby and Rhona Sims in Greenville, SC. Completed in June 2025, this Outlets & Switches project focused on safe, reliable power to protect a mobile trailer from water intrusion issues while bringing outdoor receptacles up to current safety standards.

The homeowners later praised our team with a positive review of the service experience.

Scope of Work

Our licensed technicians, Aaron Smith and Tyler Harris, installed a new 20-amp circuit pulled from the existing exterior main to serve the sump pump and interior outlets in the mobile trailer. The installation included trenching, direct-burial wiring, weather-resistant protection, and a thorough panel rejuvenation.

  • Dedicated 20A sump pump circuit: New 20-amp breaker installed to provide clean, reliable power for the pump.
  • Trenching and direct-burial cable: Approximately 75 feet of UF-B 12/2 cable trenched at roughly 18–24 inches for durability and code compliance.
  • Outdoor GFCI with in-use bubble cover: Weather-resistant (WR) GFCI receptacle and bubble cover keep the outlet protected during rain and while in use.
  • Conduit transitions: About 10 feet of 3/4-inch PVC conduit used where needed for protection and secure transitions.
  • Interior wiring: Approximately 25 feet of NM-B 14/2 Romex for general-purpose interior outlets and lighting inside the trailer.
  • Panel rejuvenation: Cleaned the panel, re-tensioned lugs and breaker terminals, verified proper ground/neutral separation, checked for moisture intrusion, sealed openings, confirmed utility voltage, applied antioxidant where needed, and—with consent—tested AFCI/GFCI functions.

Safety, Code, and Best Practices

Outdoor sump pump circuits in Greenville, SC must withstand weather and moisture. Our team selected a WR-rated GFCI receptacle and an in-use bubble cover to maintain protection whether the pump is plugged in or not. For the underground run, UF cable was buried to appropriate depth; direct-burial wiring is typically 24 inches deep, or may be as shallow as 12 inches when GFCI-protected, depending on application and local code allowances.

Before any digging, utilities must be located. We coordinated trenching with homeowner responsibility to call 811 so underground lines can be marked prior to excavation. Inside the electrical panel, we ensured one conductor per lug, verified ground and neutral bars were correctly isolated, and inspected for signs of water or corrosion—critical steps that help prevent overheating, nuisance trips, and potential fire hazards.

Why This Upgrade Matters

  • Reliable drainage: A dedicated 20A circuit keeps the sump pump running without sharing capacity with other loads.
  • Moisture protection: WR-rated GFCI and a bubble cover safeguard the receptacle and reduce shock risk.
  • Cleaner, safer panel: A rejuvenated panel improves connection integrity and equipment longevity.
  • Code-conscious installation: Proper burial depth, correct wiring methods, and tested protection devices support compliance and safety.
