Project overview

Our Charlotte team completed a clean, code-compliant upgrade for homeowner Megan Mchugh in Charlotte, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos from our Charlotte (Matthews) branch, the job added a dedicated 20-amp circuit from the panel to the pantry and finished with a GFCI outlet for safer small-appliance use. Completed on September 22, 2025, this installation helps prevent overloads and improves protection against electrical shock.

Scope of work

To support modern kitchen and pantry appliances, the customer requested a dedicated line and a protected receptacle. We installed a new 20-amp breaker, ran 12-gauge NM-B wiring to the pantry, and fitted a GFCI receptacle with a matching cover plate. The result is a reliable, dedicated circuit sized for higher-current devices.

  • New 20-amp breaker: Provides a dedicated circuit for small appliances.
  • 31 ft NM-B 12/2 copper cable: Proper wire gauge for 20-amp circuits; includes any needed junction box.
  • GFCI receptacle with cover: Adds shock protection and easy test/reset functionality.

Why this upgrade matters

  • Improved safety: GFCI protection reduces the risk of electrical shock in kitchen and pantry areas.
  • Reduced nuisance trips: A dedicated 20-amp line helps prevent overloads when using toaster ovens, stand mixers, microwaves, and similar appliances.
  • Code-conscious installation: Proper breaker sizing, 12-gauge wiring, and a grounded, GFCI-protected receptacle align with modern electrical standards.
  • Convenience: Reliable power where it’s needed most, without daisy-chaining off smaller, shared circuits.

Our installation approach

We assessed panel capacity, identified an appropriate route for the new cable, and installed the 20-amp breaker. After running 12/2 NM-B to the pantry, we set a GFCI receptacle with a neat finish plate. The circuit and receptacle were verified for correct polarity, grounding, and GFCI operation to confirm safe performance for everyday use.

  • Existing outlets are on shared 15-amp circuits and frequently trip under load.
  • You’re updating older wiring and want modern shock protection.
