Our Asheville branch team completed a whole-home generator interlock/manual transfer solution and a dedicated 60A spa circuit for Robert Cornell in Swannanoa, NC. This turnkey upgrade improves outage readiness while delivering safe, code-compliant power for a new spa. The work was completed on August 14, 2026 by technicians Frank Fragale and Aaron Smith.

What we installed

  • Generator interlock/manual transfer: We reconfigured the main electrical panel so the new generator breaker and the backed-up branch circuits are positioned at the top left. An interlock kit was mounted on the panel face to mechanically prevent backfeed and ensure safe switchover during outages. We also applied clear, code-compliant panel labeling to guide operation.
  • Generator inlet and feeder: A customer-supplied generator inlet was mounted adjacent to the existing meter combo. From the panel, we installed up to 15 ft of feeder to the inlet and provided a 15 ft whip that can be stored with the portable generator for quick connection.
  • 60A spa circuit with GFCI protection: We installed a 60-amp GFCI breaker dedicated to the spa and pulled #6 THHN conductors through existing conduit to complete the circuit.
  • Liquidtight conduit and fittings: Sealproof liquidtight flexible conduit (1" and 3/4") with appropriate connectors and supports was installed where needed for durable, weather-resistant routing.
  • Required service outlet for spa equipment: We added a GFCI receptacle with an in-use bubble cover below the existing meter combo to provide a safe service outlet for spa maintenance and accessories.
  • Disconnect notes: A separate disconnect was not required because the existing meter combo serves as the disconnect for this setup.

Why a manual transfer interlock makes sense

A panel interlock is a reliable, cost-effective manual transfer solution that physically isolates utility power from generator power. It helps prevent dangerous backfeed, protects equipment, and provides a straightforward sequence to energize selected circuits during an outage. With the panel labeling we applied, the homeowner can quickly and confidently switch to generator power and restore essential circuits when the grid goes down.

Spa power done right

Spas demand a robust, dedicated circuit with proper ground-fault protection and weather-ready wiring methods. This installation uses a 60A GFCI breaker for safety, #6 THHN conductors for ampacity, and liquidtight flexible conduit for durable, outdoor-rated protection. The nearby GFCI service receptacle with an in-use bubble cover adds convenience and maintains weatherproof integrity whether or not a plug is inserted.

Materials and components used

  • Interlock/Manual Transfer Package: Interlock kit, 50A generator breaker, circuit splicing as needed, code labeling, up to 15 ft feeder to inlet, mounted generator inlet, and a 15 ft generator whip (portable generator not included).
  • Conductors: Approximately 25 ft of #6 THHN (3–4 strand) for the 60A spa circuit.
  • Protection: 60A GFCI breaker for the spa; 50A standard breaker for the generator interlock.
  • Raceway: Liquidtight flexible conduit (1" and 3/4") with connectors, LBs, and supports as applicable.
  • Receptacles: Weather-resistant GFCI outlet with an in-use bubble cover for spa service needs.

The interlock prevents simultaneous utility and generator power, GFCI protection safeguards the spa circuit, and the outdoor receptacle’s bubble cover ensures weather protection in use or at rest.
