Generator Inlet & Manual Transfer Switch Installation in Chapin, SC
Completion date: December 3, 2024
Location: Chapin, SC | Category: Whole-Home Generators, Manual Transfer Switch
Technician: Brad Anderson | Branch: Greenville (Taylors)
Touchstone Electric’s Greenville team completed a safe, code-labeled backup power hookup for homeowner Daniel Hinkel in Chapin, SC. This project centered on installing a manual transfer switch setup using a panel interlock, a 50A generator breaker, a mounted generator inlet, and a 15 ft whip—giving the home a dependable way to power essential circuits during outages.
Project Overview
To prepare the electrical system for generator backup, we reconfigured the main panel so the new generator breaker and the homeowner’s chosen backed-up circuits are positioned at the top-left of the panel. An interlock kit was installed on the panel face to mechanically prevent the main breaker and the generator breaker from being on at the same time. This helps protect the generator, the home’s electrical system, and utility workers by eliminating backfeed risks. We also applied clear, durable labels so operation is simple and fast when the power goes out.
From the panel, we routed up to 15 feet of feeder to a fixed generator inlet. We also provided a 15 ft whip that can be stored with the homeowner’s generator for a quick connection to the inlet whenever it’s needed.

Why Choose a Manual Transfer Switch with Interlock?
- Safety-first operation: The interlock requires the main breaker to be off before energizing the generator breaker, helping prevent backfeed.
- Clarity in an outage: Code-labeled circuits make it easy to know exactly which breakers to operate.
- Efficient power use: Directly powers selected circuits without running multiple extension cords.
- Reliable setup: A permanently mounted inlet and dedicated 50A breaker create a robust connection point.
