Garage subpanel installation and breaker upgrades in Charlotte

Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch (Matthews) completed a clean, code-focused subpanel project for homeowner Joshua White in Charlotte, NC. On September 29, 2025, technician Danny Bishop removed an outdated split-bus panel and furnished a midsized indoor subpanel in the garage, delivering safer capacity and better circuit organization for the home.

This project is part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Subpanel Installation services for Charlotte-area homeowners.

What we did

  • Safely removed the failing split-bus panel and prepared the garage location for the new equipment.
  • Furnished and installed a midsized 12/24 indoor subpanel (up to 125A capacity) for future-ready circuit management.
  • Installed and organized new standard breakers matched to the home’s circuits and loads.
  • Carefully trimmed surrounding paneling as needed and reinstalled it to achieve a neat, finished look.
  • Secured an electrical permit and completed final checks for a clean, code-conscious fit.

The result is a tidier layout with improved serviceability and room to expand, all completed with attention to detail inside the garage space.

Breakers installed for reliable performance

  • 6 × 15A Standard – for lighting and general branch circuits.
  • 9 × 20A Standard – ideal for small-appliance and kitchen circuits.
  • 1 × 20A Double-Pole Standard – for 240V equipment as needed.
  • 1 × 30A Double-Pole Standard – capacity commonly used for a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger.

This balanced mix supports current household needs while positioning the subpanel for future additions.

Permitting and code considerations

For this project, our team secured the required electrical permit. The midsized subpanel package includes permitting; breakers are provided separately. Note that the scope does not include conduit, feeder, trenching, or a grounding system for detached structures.

As local inspectors continue to implement NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may be required to upgrade specific circuits to AFCI protection. Installing AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping. In those cases, additional diagnostic work—like tracing and separating shared conductors—may be needed to resolve the issue safely and correctly.
