200A Panel & Meter Upgrade in Winston-Salem, NC
Touchstone Electric completed a comprehensive 200A service upgrade for homeowners Brett & Lisa Henault in Winston-Salem, NC. Led by technician Christian Cedillos, our Charlotte business unit (Matthews branch) replaced the aging electrical equipment, brought the home’s service up to current code, and coordinated permitting and inspection to ensure a smooth, compliant installation.
Completed on May 16, 2024, this project enhances capacity, safety, and reliability while preparing the home for present and future electrical needs.
Scope of Work
- New 200A Main Electrical Panel (indoor): Replaced the existing panel, labeled circuits, and performed grounding and bonding to meet current standards.
- 200A Meter Base Upgrade: Installed a new meter base with conduit to the weatherhead, new service entrance cable to the drip loop, and ground rods with grounding electrode conductors. Coordinated the utility power drop.
- Breaker Updates: Installed a balanced mix of new breakers to match the home’s loads:
- 4x 15A standard breakers for lighting and general-purpose circuits
- 9x 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
- 2x 50A standard breakers for heavy-load equipment
- 1x 20A GFCI breaker for wet and outdoor locations
- 1x 100A 2-pole breaker feeding a subpanel
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Integrated surge protection to help safeguard appliances and sensitive electronics from voltage spikes.
- Permitting & Inspection: Filed the electrical permit and scheduled all required inspections with the local authority.
To minimize disruption, we scheduled the outage and provided options for temporary, limited power during the panel changeover.
Code Compliance and Safety First
Our upgrade brought the main service equipment and distribution up to current electrical code. We verified proper bonding, confirmed a secure grounding system, and ensured clean terminations throughout. Critical safety devices were addressed with a dedicated GFCI breaker serving locations such as bathrooms, laundry, garage, exterior areas, and other damp or wet locations where protection is essential.
By modernizing the panel, installing the new meter base, and updating breakers to match the home’s circuits, the system is better protected, easier to maintain, and ready for future additions like EV chargers or new appliances.
