Subpanel Installation and Trenching in Greer, SC
On June 5, 2025, the Touchstone Electric Greenville team completed an outdoor subpanel installation with trenching in Greer, SC. Angel Medve contacted us to bring safe, code-compliant power to a detached space, and our crew delivered a neat, permitted installation from our Taylors-based branch.
Technicians Aaron Smith and Tyler Harris led the project, providing a reliable feeder, durable conduit protection where needed, and clean terminations to support present needs and future expansion.
Scope of Work Completed
- Installed an outdoor-rated subpanel, sized appropriately for the application and future circuits.
- Handled permitting and coordination with the local authority having jurisdiction to ensure a code-compliant installation.
- Completed approximately 70 feet of trenching at an 18–24 inch depth, following the project plan and safety best practices.
- Pulled and terminated approximately 80 feet of UF #10/2 direct-burial feeder to supply the new subpanel.
- Added 3/4 inch PVC conduit (about 8 feet) at transitions and exposed sections for mechanical protection, with fittings and supports as applicable.
- Installed two 20-amp standard breakers to serve the planned branch circuits.
Work was completed by a licensed electrician with apprentice support to maintain schedule and quality.
Materials and Methods
The new outdoor subpanel is designed for weather exposure and proper circuit expansion. The feeder consists of UF #10/2 cable rated for direct burial, with PVC conduit used strategically at risers and areas where extra protection and serviceability are beneficial. All conduit fittings, connectors, and supports were installed to manufacturer specifications.
Trenching was executed to a depth of 18–24 inches, in line with the planned installation method and local code requirements. Before any digging, homeowners should always contact 811 to have utilities located for safety. Once the feeder and conduit were in place, we backfilled the trench and finished with clean labeling at the new panel for straightforward identification.
Code, Permits, and Inspection Notes
- Permits were included with the subpanel scope, and the installation followed applicable NEC requirements and local amendments.
- With inspectors increasingly enforcing NEC 2020, some homes may be required to upgrade certain circuits to AFCI protection. Adding or changing to AFCI can reveal pre-existing conditions (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping and require additional troubleshooting.
- Detached structures may require their own grounding electrode system depending on layout and design. If needed, this is evaluated and quoted separately from the base subpanel scope.
Our goal is to deliver safe, durable power distribution that passes inspection and serves the space reliably for years.
