Project overview
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of Matthews, completed a permitted subpanel installation and bathroom disconnect for Air Care in Mooresville, NC. On March 6, 2025, our technicians Josh Key and Chris Rogers installed a 100-amp outdoor-rated midsized subpanel, added new breakers from 15 to 50 amps, created a bathroom junction and point of disconnect, and updated devices to meet current safety standards.
This upgrade supports present loads while creating capacity for future needs like EV charging, HVAC equipment, or additional circuits. We also added weatherproof protections and addressed code-driven safety improvements to keep the system reliable and ready for inspection.
What we installed and upgraded
- 100A subpanel (12/24 spaces): Outdoor-rated midsized panel for growth and organized circuit management, fed from the main service.
- Feeder and main protection: 80 ft of 4‑wire SER #2 aluminum cable from the main panel to the subpanel, protected by a 100A 2‑pole feeder breaker.
- Dedicated branch breakers: New 15A standard breakers for lighting and general circuits (including bathroom lighting), plus 40A and 50A breakers to support larger appliances or equipment as needed.
- Bathroom junction and disconnect: A junction box and clearly labeled point of current disconnect in the master bathroom to streamline maintenance and improve safety.
- Weatherproof receptacle protection: Installed bubble covers to keep outdoor outlets protected whether in use or not.
- Wiring and raceway: Installed NM‑B Romex (6/2 for 50A, 10/2 for 30A, 14/2 for 15A circuits) and THHN conductors as required, routed in liquidtight flexible conduit (3/4" and 1/2") for clean, code-compliant transitions.
- AL–CU splicing hardware: Polaris connectors used for safe aluminum-to-copper terminations.
The result is a safer, more flexible electrical system that consolidates circuits neatly while making future additions straightforward.
NEC 2020 code considerations
Mooresville inspections are increasingly following NEC 2020 updates. As part of this project, we reviewed arc-fault and ground-fault protection needs and noted that some existing circuits may require AFCI upgrades under current code. In older homes with shared neutrals or legacy wiring practices, new AFCI breakers can reveal preexisting issues and may trip until the wiring is corrected. Our team is prepared to diagnose and resolve these conditions if they arise so the system passes inspection and operates reliably.
