About this project in Jacksonville, NC

On August 21, 2025, our Raleigh branch completed a permitted and inspected electrical service upgrade for Ronald & Constance Ochse in Jacksonville, NC. Led by technician Francisco Martinez, the scope included a new 200-amp main panel with an aluminum bus, a whole‑home surge protection system, fresh range and dryer wiring, and a new meter/panel combo. The work was performed to current electrical code, labeled for clarity, and grounded and bonded for safety.

Every installation is backed by Touchstone Electric’s Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty, giving homeowners added confidence long after the job is done.

What we upgraded

  • 200A Indoor Main Panel (Aluminum Bus): Removed the aging panel and installed a new 200-amp unit, reconnected existing circuits, and updated grounding and bonding. The aluminum bus panel includes a 20‑year transferrable warranty and clear circuit labeling for future serviceability.
  • Whole‑Home Surge Protection: Installed a panel‑mounted surge protective device with $50,000 equipment coverage for 10 years. It diverts excess voltage to ground to help protect appliances and electronics from lightning‑related surges, grid fluctuations, and equipment cycling. Claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance policy, and direct lightning strikes are excluded.
  • New Meter/Panel Combo (200A, feed‑through lugs): Coordinated the power drop with the utility, installed the meter/panel combo outdoors, and added ground rods with grounding electrode conductors for a robust service entrance.
  • Dedicated Appliance Circuits: Replaced the range wire and dryer wire and installed appropriately sized two‑pole breakers to support reliable 240V operation.
  • Breaker updates: Balanced and installed new standard breakers as required, including 15A/20A branch circuits and dedicated 30A/50A/60A two‑pole breakers for major appliances.
  • Permitting & Inspection: Pulled permits, coordinated inspection, and scheduled the utility power drop to minimize downtime. During any outage, we can make a generator available for limited power upon request.

Materials used on this upgrade

  • 200A indoor main panel with aluminum bus (20‑year transferrable panel warranty)
  • Whole‑home surge protector ($50k, 10‑year coverage against covered equipment)
  • Meter/panel combo with feed‑through lugs and new grounding system
  • 35 ft SER 4/0 (4‑wire) service entrance cable
  • 20 ft NM‑B 6/3 for 50‑amp 240V appliance circuits
  • 30 ft NM‑B 10/3 for 30‑amp dryer/water‑heater circuits
  • New standard breakers: multiple 15A and 20A branch circuits, plus 30A/50A/60A two‑pole breakers for large loads

Why this matters for Jacksonville homeowners

A modern 200‑amp service provides the capacity and safety headroom today’s homes need for HVAC systems, EV chargers, kitchen remodels, and other high‑demand appliances. The surge protection we installed helps reduce equipment damage from everyday voltage spikes and severe weather events common to coastal North Carolina, potentially extending the lifespan of electronics and appliances.

As local inspectors adopt 2020 NEC requirements, certain circuits may need AFCI protection. When those upgrades reveal older wiring quirks—such as shared neutrals—our team can diagnose and resolve the issue to keep your system compliant and nuisance‑trip free.

Project outcome

The Ochse home now benefits from a safer, code‑compliant 200A electrical system, a clearly labeled main panel, robust grounding, and whole‑home surge protection. With new range and dryer wiring and properly sized breakers, the home’s essential appliances run on reliable, dedicated circuits—future‑ready for additional upgrades.
