Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade for Timber Ridge Apartments in Charlotte, NC on May 14, 2026. Led by technician Will Cruz, this Panels & Service Upgrades project focused on safety, capacity, and code compliance—delivering a modernized system ready for present and future electrical needs.
What we upgraded in Charlotte, NC
- Panel upgrades and breakers: Installed and supplied two new 60A breakers with tie-downs for reliable distribution, plus a new 20A AFCI tandem breaker to add modern arc-fault protection on living-area circuits.
- Whole-home surge protection: Added a panel-mounted surge protective device to divert damaging voltage spikes to ground, helping safeguard appliances and electronics and extend their lifespan. The unit is backed by a 3-year manufacturer program with up to $10,000 in covered equipment protection (exclusions apply, such as direct lightning strikes and certain systems).
- Grounding system: Installed new ground rods and grounding electrode conductors, secured all connections, and tied the system back to the main service for a robust, code-compliant grounding path.
- Dedicated golf cart circuit: Installed and supplied a 20A dedicated circuit to support charging needs without overloading general-use receptacles.
- Feeder to the shed: Installed and supplied a new feeder using THHN #6 conductors for a 60A-ready run, protected in conduit for durability and future maintenance.
- Conduit, trenching, and backfill: Installed approximately 40 feet of 1-inch EMT where applicable and trenched about 35 feet at around 12 inches depth to route and protect the new feeder before backfilling.
- Panel rejuvenation and code check: Cleaned and vacuumed the panel, re-tensioned lugs and breaker terminals, verified proper separation and one-conductor-per-lug on neutral and ground bars, sealed openings, confirmed voltage, and tested AFCI/GFCI operation with customer consent.
Why this electrical panel upgrade matters
Between growing equipment loads and sensitive electronics, a reliable panel is essential. In Charlotte, NC homes and multi-family properties, modern breakers, proper grounding, and whole-house surge protection help prevent nuisance trips, reduce fire risks, and protect critical equipment during storms or grid fluctuations. The dedicated 20A golf cart circuit isolates charging from household receptacles, and the new shed feeder adds safe, expandable power for outbuildings.
Our panel rejuvenation service brings aging equipment up to current National Electrical Code standards, tightening terminations, confirming correct neutrals and grounds, and sealing out moisture and pests—important steps to avoid heat build-up, arcing, or premature equipment failure.
Trenching, conduit, and a durable shed feeder
To supply power to the shed, we trenched and installed conduit to protect the new feeder conductors. Using THHN #6 conductors in appropriately sized conduit provides a resilient pathway for a 60A-ready circuit, improving performance and serviceability over time. Proper burial and backfill help keep the installation protected from physical damage and environmental exposure.
Peace of mind with surge protection
The installed surge protector is designed to shunt excess voltage to ground before it can damage connected systems, helping to protect appliances and electronics from transient surges. The device includes a 3-year, up to $10,000 manufacturer-backed coverage program for covered equipment when properly connected; exclusions apply (for example, direct lightning strikes and certain systems such as security or medical equipment are not covered).
