Electrical Panel Upgrade, Breakers, and Lighting – Matthews, NC
Touchstone Electric recently completed a comprehensive electrical upgrade for homeowner Nate Randall in Matthews, NC. Led by our Charlotte branch technician Danny Bishop, this project modernized the home’s main service equipment, improved grounding and surge protection, and added practical lighting and outlets in the crawlspace and basement entry. Completed on December 3, 2024, the work delivers safer, code-compliant power distribution and brighter, more functional spaces.
After the project, Nate praised our team with a review, recognizing our workmanship and attention to detail.
What We Installed
- 200A Outdoor Main Panel (Aluminum) brought up to current code: replaced the panel and main lugs, labeled circuits, grounded and bonded the panel, and reconnected the service entrance cable and existing circuits.
- Surge Protection integrated at the panel to help protect sensitive electronics and appliances.
- Grounding Upgrade with new ground rods and grounding electrode conductor to improve system safety.
- Breakers updated and added to match the home’s loads and 2020 NEC requirements.
- Crawlspace Lighting with four keyless fixtures on a single-pole switch for safe, hands-free access to equipment areas.
- GFCI-Protected Outlets (2) in the crawlspace for an air purifier and water filtration system.
- 4-foot LED Strip Fixture at the basement entry for crisp, efficient illumination.
Breaker Configuration and Load Coverage
To support everyday use and future needs, the panel was equipped with a balanced mix of breakers:
- 1× 15A AFCI breaker to serve habitable-area receptacles and lighting per 2020 NEC arc-fault requirements.
- 6× 15A standard breakers for lighting and standard branch circuits, including bathroom lighting as applicable.
- 8× 20A standard breakers dedicated to small-appliance and similar circuits.
- 3× 30A double-pole breakers typically used for larger loads like water heaters, dryers, or condensers.
- 1× 40A standard breaker for medium-sized equipment.
- 1× 50A standard breaker for ranges, heat equipment, small subpanels, or EV charging.
- 1× 60A standard breaker for high-demand appliances or subfeeds.
During the panel changeover, power is briefly disconnected. For homeowner convenience, Touchstone Electric makes a generator available for limited power usage during the outage.
Safety, Code, and Permitting
- Permitting and inspection were included and handled through the authority having jurisdiction, ensuring a smooth, transparent process.
- Grounding and bonding were brought to current standards with new ground rods and secure terminations.
- Integrated surge protection at the main panel helps defend against damaging voltage spikes.
- Panel warranty: This installation includes a 20-year transferable panel warranty.
Important note on AFCI requirements: As local inspectors implement 2020 NEC, some circuits may require AFCI breakers. In homes with preexisting wiring conditions (such as shared neutrals), AFCIs can trip immediately and may necessitate diagnostic work to locate and correct the issue, which can involve opening devices on the affected circuits.
Lighting and Convenience Upgrades
For safer maintenance and easier access, we installed four keyless fixtures in the crawlspace on a simple single-pole switch. Two GFCI-protected receptacles now power the air purifier and water filtration system with added shock protection in the damp environment. At the basement entry, a 4-foot LED strip delivers bright, efficient light right where it’s needed.
