Electrical panel upgrade and surge protection in Durham, NC
Completed on July 13, 2026 by our Raleigh branch, this project for Wesley Lake in Durham focused on a safe, code-compliant main panel replacement and whole-home surge protection. Lead technicians Johann Fischer and Brad Williams delivered a clean, organized installation under our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty.
Scope: Panels & Service Upgrades, with emphasis on Electrical Panel Upgrades and AFCI/GFCI safety enhancements.
Project highlights
- Main electrical panel replacement (200A, indoor) with aluminum bus bar featuring a transferable 20-year manufacturer warranty.
- $50,000 / 10-year whole-home surge protection system installed at the main panel to help shield covered appliances and electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
- AFCI and GFCI updates to align with current NEC requirements and improve fire and shock protection where applicable.
- Grounding and bonding verified and corrected as needed for a safe, low-impedance fault path.
- Complete labeling and organization of circuits for easier future service.
- Permit pulled and inspected in Durham for documented, code-compliant work.
What we installed
- Main panel (200A, aluminum bus) – Panel brought to current code; main lug replaced; service entrance and existing circuits reconnected; all circuits relabeled for clarity.
- Whole-house surge protector – Installed at the service equipment to divert excess voltage to ground during surges from lightning, utility fluctuations, or large load cycling. Coverage includes a $50k, 10-year warranty for covered equipment per manufacturer terms (exclusions and secondary-to-insurance clauses apply).
- Breaker upgrades and replacements:
- 1 × 40A standard
- 3 × 30A double-pole standard
- 6 × 20A standard
- 8 × 15A standard
- 2 × 15A AFCI
- 1 × 25A double-pole standard
- 1 × 20A GFCI
- Team support – An electrical apprentice assisted to maintain efficiency and a tidy workspace.
Safety, code, and workmanship
As Durham continues adopting current electrical codes, AFCI and GFCI protection are increasingly required in specific areas of the home. Our team updated protection where applicable and verified proper grounding and bonding practices throughout the service equipment.
We also educated the homeowner on considerations that can arise with AFCI technology, such as potential tripping due to preexisting wiring conditions (for example, shared neutrals). Addressing these conditions ensures both compliance and long-term reliability.
All work is backed by Touchstone Electric’s Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty for peace of mind, in addition to the 20-year transferable panel warranty and the surge protector’s $50k / 10-year coverage per manufacturer terms.
Why this upgrade benefits Durham homes
- Capacity and reliability – A modern main panel with updated breakers reduces nuisance tripping and prepares the home for future loads.
- Protection from surges – Whole-home surge protection helps extend the lifespan of appliances and electronics by mitigating damaging voltage spikes.
- Improved safety – AFCI and GFCI protection lowers fire and shock risks in the most vulnerable areas of the home.
- Documented compliance – Permit pulled and inspected, providing a clear paper trail for future renovations or home sales.
