Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed an electrical panel upgrade and whole-home surge protection installation for a homeowner in Havelock, NC. Scottie Harris and Francisco Martinez replaced the existing main panel with a new 200-amp indoor panel featuring an aluminum bus bar, helping bring the home’s electrical system up to current code requirements and supporting safer, more dependable power distribution.
As part of the project, our electricians handled permitting and prepared the installation for inspection. The new panel was properly grounded and bonded, existing circuits and the service entrance cable were reconnected, and the panel was clearly labeled for easier identification of circuits. Because a panel replacement requires a power interruption, Touchstone Electric made a generator available for limited power use during the outage.
Updated Panel Components and Circuit Protection
A modern electrical panel provides an organized, central point for managing the home’s electrical circuits. For this Havelock panel upgrade, the installation included the required standard breakers for the home’s existing electrical needs, including breakers for small-appliance circuits, standard branch circuits, bathroom lighting, and larger 240-volt equipment such as a dryer, water heater, air conditioner, range, heater, spa, or EV charger.

The aluminum-bus panel includes a 20-year transferable warranty. During panel upgrades, inspectors may also require certain circuits to be updated to meet applicable code requirements, including AFCI protection where required. AFCI breakers can identify certain electrical issues, and pre-existing wiring conditions may require further diagnosis if immediate tripping occurs.
Whole-Home Surge Protection for Added Peace of Mind
In addition to the panel replacement, the Raleigh team installed a whole-home surge protection system at the main electrical panel. Whole-home surge protectors help divert excess voltage safely to ground before it can travel through the home’s electrical system. This added layer of protection can help reduce the effects of surges caused by power grid fluctuations, electrical equipment cycling, and other voltage events.
The installed surge protection system includes a $50,000, 10-year warranty for covered equipment in the event of product failure, subject to warranty terms and existing insurance coverage. Covered equipment can include many hardwired appliances and electrical components, such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, HVAC equipment located inside the home, dishwashers, disposals, wiring, outlets, switches, breakers, and certain built-in appliances. Direct lightning strikes, security systems, and medical equipment are excluded from covered equipment.
