Electrical Panel Upgrade & Surge Protection in Wilmington, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh team completed a permitted and inspected electrical panel upgrade, whole-home surge protection, GFCI code updates, and a full redevice for a home in Wilmington, NC.
Customer: Tammy Johnson | Date: 02/19/2025 | Technicians: Tyler Chapman & Francisco Martinez
Warranty: Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty Included
What We Completed
- Main Electrical Panel Replacement (150A, aluminum bus): Removed the aging equipment and installed a new indoor main panel with a 20‑year transferable panel warranty. We grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, reconnected existing branch circuits, and clearly labeled the new panel for safety and future service.
- Whole‑Home Surge Protection: Installed a panel-mounted surge protective device with $100,000 coverage and a 10‑year warranty. This helps shield appliances and sensitive electronics from transient voltage spikes caused by lightning-related surges, utility fluctuations, or large appliance cycling. Note: coverage is secondary to the homeowner’s insurance and does not apply to direct lightning strikes; security systems and medical equipment are excluded per the manufacturer.
- Whole‑Home Redevice (approx. 1,140 sq ft): Replaced standard and GFCI receptacles, switches, and wall plates throughout the home. Receptacles were upgraded to tamper-resistant designs for enhanced child safety.
- GFCI Protection to Current Code: Installed and tested GFCI devices where required by NEC for improved shock protection in moisture-prone and other designated areas.
-
Breaker Updates: Replaced select standard breakers to match circuit needs and current code, including:
- 1 × 40A Standard
- 4 × 30A Standard (Double Pole)
- 3 × 20A Standard
- 5 × 15A Standard
- Permitting & Inspection: Pulled the permit and coordinated inspections with the local authority to ensure full compliance.
- Gold Home Safety Plan: Enrolled the home in our Annual Home Safety Plan – GOLD for ongoing protection and priority service.
Code, Safety, and Convenience
As inspectors continue implementing modern NEC requirements, certain circuits may require AFCI protection. Our team brought the new panel and protective devices up to current standards, verified grounding and bonding, and labeled all circuits. During the panel changeout, we minimized downtime and provided options for limited temporary power to keep essential items running.
Why This Upgrade Benefits Wilmington Homeowners
- Safety First: New panel, verified grounding/bonding, GFCI protection, and updated breakers reduce hazards from aging components and nuisance faults.
- Equipment Protection: Whole-home surge protection helps prevent damage to appliances and electronics, extending their service life.
- Reliability: Cleanly organized, labeled circuits and new devices make future maintenance and troubleshooting faster and safer.
- Peace of Mind: Backed by a 20‑year panel warranty, a 10‑year/$100k surge warranty, and our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty.
