Project overview
Our Raleigh team completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade and whole‑home surge protection project in Tarboro, NC for St. Paul Baptist Church (Charles Glass). Led by technician Chris Rogers, this Panels & Service Upgrades job modernized the facility’s service equipment, improved grounding and bonding, and added robust surge protection for sensitive electronics and appliances.
Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty is included on our workmanship, and the new main panel carries a 20‑year transferable warranty.
Scope of work
- Pulled permit and coordinated inspection for a code‑compliant installation.
- Main electrical panel replacement (indoor, 200‑amp, aluminum bus bar): brought the service up to current code, grounded and bonded the panel, relabeled circuits, reconnected the service entrance, and reconnected existing branch circuits.
- Whole‑home surge protection: installed a device at the main panel with $50,000 equipment coverage and a 10‑year warranty to divert excess voltage safely to ground during surges.
- Grounding system upgrade: drove a new ground rod and ran a continuous grounding electrode conductor to the main panel (up to 25 ft).
- Water pipe bonding: bonded metallic water piping to the grounding system per NEC 250.104 using #6 AWG copper conductors and UL‑listed bonding clamps (within 50 ft of the panel).
Breaker updates and circuit protection
To match the updated service, we installed and organized new breakers suited for the church’s common loads:
- 3 × 20A GFCI (for bathrooms, laundry, garage, exterior, or similar)
- 11 × 20A standard (small appliances and general‑purpose circuits)
- 4 × 30A double‑pole (dryer, water heater, AC condenser, spa, EV charger)
- 2 × 50A standard (range, furnace/heat, small subpanel, EV charger)
- 1 × 60A standard (range, furnace/heat, small subpanel, EV charger)
- 2 × 15A standard (lighting and standard branch circuits)
We ensured the new panel meets current electrical code. As local inspectors implement NEC 2020 requirements, some projects may require AFCI breaker upgrades and additional diagnostics; our team is prepared to handle those needs when applicable.
Surge protection details
The whole‑home surge protector safeguards the church’s electrical system from transient voltage caused by lightning activity, utility grid fluctuations, and large equipment cycling. By diverting excess voltage to ground, it helps prevent damage and extends the life of appliances and electronics.
- Warranty: $50,000 equipment coverage for 10 years
- Coverage notes: Claims are secondary to the existing insurance policy; direct lightning strikes are excluded.
- Covered equipment (examples): washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, indoor HVAC units, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, breakers, and hardwired devices such as built‑in microwaves, furnaces, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape and home lighting when properly protected.
- Exclusions: security systems and medical equipment.
Results for Tarboro facility
The upgraded 200A panel, improved grounding and bonding, and dedicated surge protection deliver safer operation, better reliability, and streamlined maintenance for the church. Labeling and organization of circuits support faster troubleshooting, while modern protection devices align the installation with today’s code and performance expectations.
