Electrical Panel Upgrade & Surge Protection in Snow Hill, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive panel upgrade and whole-home surge protection service for homeowner Ronnie Jones in Snow Hill, NC. This Panels & Service Upgrades project, categorized under Electrical Panel Upgrades, was completed on 2026-02-05 by our technician Francisco Martinez.

What We Upgraded

We removed the aging main panel and installed a new 200A indoor main electrical panel featuring an aluminum bus bar and a 20-year transferable warranty. The panel was brought to current electrical code and fully labeled for clarity and future service.

  • Grounded and bonded the new panel for safety
  • Reconnected the service entrance cable and existing circuits
  • Completed permitting and coordinated final inspection
  • Provided a generator for limited power usage during the outage

This project also included our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty, giving the homeowner lasting peace of mind in Snow Hill.

Whole-Home Surge Protection

To safeguard sensitive electronics and major appliances, we installed a whole-home surge protection system with $10,000 coverage and a 3-year warranty. This device protects the home from utility fluctuations and lightning-related surges that can damage HVAC equipment, kitchen appliances, and home office electronics.

Breaker Configuration and Circuit Readiness

The new panel is ready to support present and future electrical needs, including high-demand equipment like EV chargers, HVAC systems, and ranges. As part of the upgrade, we installed and configured:

  • 1x Breaker – 60A Standard (range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.)
  • 1x Breaker – 50A Standard (range, heater/furnace, small subpanel, EV charger, etc.)
  • 3x Breakers – 30A Standard, Double-Pole (dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, EV charger, etc.)
  • 1x Breaker – 25A Standard, Double-Pole (small condenser, well pump, or mini-split)
  • 4x Breakers – 20A Standard (small appliances)
  • 2x Breakers – 15A Standard (bathroom lighting and standard branch circuits per 2020 code)

Clean, Code-Compliant Installation Details

  • Circuit extensions and relocation: 9 custom tasks to neatly route and extend circuits to the indoor panel
  • Conduit: 3/4" PVC with appropriate mounting, connectors, and LBs for protection and organization
  • Service conductors: 4/0 SEU (3-wire) from the service drop to the meter base and from the meter base to the distribution panelboard for the 200A main service

The result is a safer, more reliable electrical system with improved capacity and a tidy, service-friendly layout.

Inspection Notes and 2020 NEC Considerations

Local inspectors are increasingly applying 2020 NEC requirements. In some cases, this can include AFCI breaker upgrades. Installing AFCI protection can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping. If discovered, the remedy may involve tracing and separating circuits, which can require additional diagnostic time. Our team clearly communicates these possibilities so homeowners understand the path to a fully compliant system.
