Electrical Panel Upgrade & Whole-Home Surge Protection in Rock Hill, SC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch completed a comprehensive 200A outdoor main panel upgrade and surge protection project for homeowner Tracy Greene in Rock Hill, SC. Led by technician Jose Rodriguez, this permitted, inspected, and code-compliant service modernized the home’s electrical infrastructure, improved safety, and added robust protection against power surges. Completed in October 2025, the project was delivered with careful planning and a focus on long-term reliability.
What We Upgraded
- 200A Outdoor Main Panel (Aluminum) – We replaced the existing service equipment with a new 200A main panel, properly grounded and bonded, with all circuits reconnected and clearly labeled for future serviceability.
- Whole-Home Surge Protector – A panel-mounted SPD now diverts excess voltage safely to ground, shielding the home’s electrical system and connected equipment from damaging spikes caused by lightning activity, utility fluctuations, or large appliances cycling.
- New Grounding System – We installed new ground rods and ran a grounding electrode conductor to the main service equipment, ensuring a low-impedance path to earth in accordance with current code.
- Breaker Updates – Installed a 100A 2‑pole breaker for a subpanel, a 50A standard breaker for high-demand loads (such as a range, heat equipment, or EV charging), and three 30A double‑pole breakers for dedicated appliances like a dryer, water heater, or air condenser.
During the brief outage required for the changeover, we made a generator available for limited power usage to minimize disruption.
Safety, Capacity, and Peace of Mind
Modernizing to a 200A service helps meet today’s electrical demand—whether for HVAC, kitchen remodels, or future EV charging—while reducing nuisance tripping and overheating risks. The added surge protection helps prevent premature failure of sensitive electronics and appliances, extending their service life and reducing costly replacements after storms or grid disturbances common in the Rock Hill area.
Permits, Code, and Inspection
This project included permitting and inspection. As local inspectors increasingly enforce NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may need AFCI breaker upgrades on certain circuits. Homeowners should be aware that AFCI protection can reveal preexisting wiring issues—such as shared neutrals—that may require additional troubleshooting to resolve. Our team will identify and explain options if such conditions are discovered.
Warranties and Coverage Details
- Panel Warranty – The new main panel includes a 20‑year transferrable warranty for lasting confidence in the installation.
- Surge Protection Coverage – The installed SPD includes $10,000 of coverage for 3 years for covered home equipment in the unlikely event of protector failure. Coverage is secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance and excludes direct lightning strikes. Covered items can include major appliances, wiring, outlets/switches, breakers, and hard‑wired devices when protected by the properly connected surge device. Security systems and medical equipment are excluded.
