Electrical Panel Upgrade and Surge Protection in Raleigh, NC
Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a permitted electrical panel upgrade with whole-home surge protection for homeowner Winston Knight in Raleigh, NC. Led by technician Cody Perry, this project modernized the home’s service equipment, improved safety, and prepared the electrical system for present and future demand. Work was completed on February 4, 2026.
Project Overview
As part of our Panels & Service Upgrades and Electrical Panel Upgrades services, we replaced the main panel with a new 200-amp indoor panel featuring an aluminum bus, brought the installation to current electrical code, and added a whole-home surge protection system. The upgrade was fully permitted and scheduled for inspection in accordance with Raleigh, NC requirements.
Scope of Work
- Permit pulled for code-compliant installation and inspection.
- Main electrical panel replacement (200A, aluminum bus):
- Grounded and bonded the panel per current code.
- Reconnected the service entrance conductors and existing branch circuits.
- Relabeled circuits for clear identification and future maintenance.
- Limited power kept available during the outage via a generator provided by Touchstone Electric.
- Whole-home surge protection installed with $10K/3-year coverage as noted on the device specification.
- THHN 2/0 feeder conductors installed to support the upgraded service as required.
- Breaker updates to serve household loads:
- 2 × 40A standard double-pole
- 2 × 30A standard double-pole
- 13 × 20A standard
- 9 × 15A standard (including bathroom lighting per 2020 code)
- Crawlspace diagnostic and extension to provide a safe, code-appropriate method when a direct home run wasn’t feasible.
- 60 ft NM-B 12/2 installed for 20-amp circuits, with junction boxes as needed.
Note: This scope did not include a service disconnect, conduit, main breaker, or meter upgrade unless separately specified.
Code and Safety Considerations
With Raleigh inspectors implementing aspects of the NEC 2020, some homes may require AFCI breaker upgrades on certain circuits. AFCIs can trip when preexisting wiring issues are present (for example, shared neutrals), which can require additional diagnostic time to locate and correct. During this project, our team followed current code requirements and ensured proper grounding, bonding, and labeling to enhance overall system safety.
