Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade and whole-home surge protection project for homeowner Alan Place in Oxford, NC. Led by technician Brad Williams, this job was finalized on October 10, 2025 and included permitting, safety updates, labeling, and inspection coordination to bring the home’s service equipment up to current code.
Project Overview
Our team replaced the home’s main 200-amp indoor electrical panel and added a whole-home surge protection system for enhanced reliability and protection against damaging voltage spikes. The new panel features an aluminum bus bar and includes a 20-year transferrable manufacturer warranty. To protect sensitive electronics and appliances, we installed a surge protection system backed by a $10,000 equipment coverage / 3-year warranty. As always, Touchstone Electric handled the permit, code compliance requirements, and final inspection.
This upgrade also comes with our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty for added peace of mind.
What We Installed
- Main 200A Panel Replacement: Grounded and bonded the panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, transferred and labeled existing circuits, and brought the equipment in line with the current electrical code.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Integrated at the main panel to help safeguard major appliances, HVAC, and electronics; includes $10K/3-year protection terms from the manufacturer.
- Breaker Updates:
- 1 × 50-amp standard breaker (common uses: range, furnace, small subpanel, EV charger)
- 1 × 30-amp standard double-pole breaker (dryer, water heater, AC condenser, spa, EV charger)
- 8 × 20-amp standard breakers (small appliance circuits)
- 10 × 15-amp standard breakers (bathroom lighting and general branch circuits)
- 1 × 25-amp standard double-pole breaker (small condenser, well pump, mini-split)
- 1 × 20-amp standard double-pole breaker (small appliances or equipment)
During a panel changeover, power is temporarily disconnected. To keep homeowners comfortable, our team makes a generator available for limited power usage during the outage window.
Code, Safety, and Inspection
As inspectors across North Carolina continue implementing NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may be required to update certain circuits to AFCI or combination AFCI/GFCI protection for improved safety. In older homes, AFCI additions can reveal preexisting wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause immediate tripping until the condition is corrected. When needed, diagnosing shared neutrals can involve opening fixtures on the affected circuits to isolate and remedy the issue.
Our approach is to identify code-required updates, explain options clearly, and complete any additional work with the same care and transparency. For this Oxford project, permitting and inspection were coordinated start to finish by our Raleigh office, helping ensure a smooth, compliant upgrade.
