Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical panel upgrade with whole-home surge protection for homeowner Robert Wells in Nashville, NC. Led by technician Brad Williams, this project was finalized on October 22, 2025 and included permitting and inspection as part of our code-compliant process.
To improve safety, reliability, and capacity, we replaced the home’s aging main panel with a modern 200-amp indoor panel featuring a copper bus. We also upgraded critical breakers to AFCI and GFCI protection and added a whole-home surge protector to safeguard appliances and electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
What we upgraded
- Main panel replacement: Installed a 200-amp indoor panel with a copper bus and fully labeled circuits. The panel was grounded and bonded; the service entrance and existing circuits were reconnected.
- Permitting and inspection: Permit pulled; inspection included.
- Breaker upgrades for safety and capacity:
- Standard breakers: 1× 60A, 2× 50A, 2× 30A double-pole
- AFCI protection: 9× 20A, 7× 15A
- GFCI protection: 2× 20A, 1× 15A
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed at the main panel to divert transient voltage to ground and help shield sensitive electronics and major appliances.
- Minimized downtime: Temporary power options were made available to keep essentials running during the scheduled outage.

Safety, code, and inspection
The new panel was brought up to current electrical code, and we included permitting and inspection to ensure a smooth and compliant installation. As inspectors continue to implement NEC 2020 requirements, some homes may require expanded AFCI protection. In certain cases, AFCI breakers can reveal pre-existing wiring conditions—such as shared neutrals—that may cause nuisance tripping. When this occurs, additional diagnostic work is sometimes necessary to locate and correct the underlying issue. Our team communicates these possibilities up front and provides clear options if further troubleshooting is needed.
