Electrical Panel Upgrade & Surge Protection in Greer, SC
Touchstone Electric’s Greenville team, operating from our Taylors branch, completed a permitted electrical panel upgrade with whole-home surge protection for homeowner Gene Starr in Greer, SC. Led by technician Ben Lively, this project modernized the home’s service equipment, enhanced grounding, and added a dedicated, code-compliant sump pump circuit to support dependable drainage.
Completed on May 1, 2024, this work brought the main service equipment up to current electrical standards and improved overall safety and reliability for the property near the Burgess Drive, SC service area.
Scope of Work
- 200A Main Panel Upgrade (Indoor): Furnished and installed a new 200-amp indoor main panel in the laundry room. Replaced the panel and main lugs, clearly labeled all circuits, and brought the installation up to current electrical code.
- Grounding and Bonding: Grounded and bonded the new panel, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and verified continuity and secure terminations throughout.
- Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a service-rated surge protective device at the main panel to guard sensitive appliances and electronics from power surges.
- Breaker Upgrades: Installed appropriately sized standard breakers, including 15A and 20A single-pole breakers for lighting and general circuits, and double-pole 30A, 40A, and 50A breakers for higher-demand equipment such as dryers, water heaters, HVAC equipment, or EV charging as applicable.
- Dedicated Sump Pump Circuit: Ran a new dedicated circuit to the crawl space for the sump pump and installed a GFCI breaker in the main panel for added protection in a damp environment.
- Ground Rod Enhancement: Drove a second ground rod and installed a continuous grounding electrode conductor back to the main panel to improve fault clearing and system stability.
Safety, Code, and Permitting
All work was completed under an electrical permit and scheduled for inspection to verify compliance with current electrical code. The upgraded grounding electrode system, proper bonding, and labeled circuits provide safer operation and easier maintenance for years to come.
During the panel changeout, service power is briefly interrupted; our team plans these steps carefully and can provide limited temporary power solutions to minimize disruption while the new equipment is set, wired, and tested.
Why This Upgrade Matters
- Capacity and Reliability: A modern 200A panel offers room for future circuits and helps reduce nuisance trips.
- Surge Protection: Whole-home surge protection helps shield HVAC systems, appliances, lighting, and electronics from damaging voltage spikes.
- Moisture-Safe Pump Power: A dedicated, GFCI-protected sump pump circuit supports reliable water management in crawl spaces and basements.
- Improved Grounding: A reinforced grounding system supports safer operation and proper fault clearing.
