Electrical Panel Upgrade & New Meter Feed in Fort Mill, SC
Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte team, based out of Matthews, completed a comprehensive panel upgrade for homeowner Richard Harnishferger in Fort Mill, SC. Led by Easton Mitchell and completed on March 11, 2025, this project replaced a recalled electrical panel, added appropriately sized breakers, and installed a new meter-to-panel feeder for a safer, more reliable, and NEC-compliant system.
This Panels & Service Upgrades project falls under our Electrical Panel Upgrades specialty—ideal for homes that need a safer distribution panel, updated breakers, and properly sized wiring to handle today’s loads.
Project Overview
We removed an outdated, recalled panel and installed a modern, midsized 12/24-circuit panel (rated up to 125A). To ensure a robust supply path, our team ran a new SEU #2 (3‑wire) feeder from the meter to the panel, paired with new PVC conduit and fittings where required. The upgraded layout improves circuit organization, enhances safety protections, and positions the home for smooth inspections under current code.
What We Installed
- Midsized 12/24 panel (up to 125A) with professional labeling and tidy wire management
- New meter-to-panel feeder: 30 ft of SEU #2 (3‑wire) service cable
- PVC conduit, fittings, and LBs: 1" where applicable for protection and routing
- Breakers for dedicated and general circuits:
- 2 × 15A tandem breakers for standard branch circuits
- 1 × 15A standard breaker for bathroom lighting (aligned with 2020 code requirements)
- 3 × 20A standard breakers for small appliance circuits
- 1 × 20A double‑pole breaker for appropriate equipment loads
- 3 × 30A double‑pole breakers for dedicated appliances/equipment
- 1 × 30A single‑pole breaker for specialized appliance needs
- Wire fishing and routing: Precision fishing through finished areas to minimize disturbance
Code, Safety, and Inspection Readiness
Our Fort Mill projects are built to meet today’s standards. We handled permitting and configured the new panel to align with NEC 2020 practices, including placement, conductor sizing, and overcurrent protection. During panel upgrades, inspectors may require AFCI (and in some areas GFCI) protection on applicable circuits. Our technicians evaluate these requirements and discuss any preexisting conditions—such as shared neutrals—that could cause nuisance tripping when AFCI protection is introduced, so homeowners understand options before proceeding.
Benefits of This Upgrade for the Homeowner
- Safety: Replaces a recalled panel with reliable, modern equipment and updated breakers
- Compliance: Panel and feeder installed to current code for smoother inspections
- Capacity & Organization: 12/24-circuit layout supports present and future circuits
- Reliability: New feeder and protected routing reduce risks from aging conductors
- Clarity: Clean labeling and balanced loads simplify future service and additions
