Electrical Panel Upgrade and Meter Replacement in Southern Pines, NC

Our Raleigh branch recently completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project in Southern Pines for homeowner Margo Drakos. Led by technician Cody Perry, the scope included relocating the main electrical panel indoors, replacing the 200-amp meter base, running new dedicated circuits for HVAC and major appliances, adding outlets, installing ceiling fans and lighting, and updating smoke detection throughout the home. The project was completed on July 30, 2024 with permits and inspection coordination handled by our team.

Project Overview

This Electrical Panel Upgrade in Southern Pines addressed capacity, safety, and convenience in one turnkey visit. Moving the main panel indoors reduces exposure to weather, improves accessibility, and supports future expansion. Upgrading the meter base and service conductors brought the home’s service equipment in line with current code and best practices, while new circuits and protective devices enhanced everyday reliability.

What We Completed

  • Main panel relocation (200A): Removed the exterior panel and installed a new indoor panel, fully grounded and bonded, with organized circuit labeling for easy identification.
  • 200A meter base replacement: Installed a new meter base with conduit to the weatherhead and new service entrance cable to the drip loop, along with ground rods and grounding electrode conductors.
  • Service conductors: Installed SER 4/0 cable to properly feed the new panel and ensure reliable 200A service.
  • Dedicated circuits: Ran new circuits for the air conditioner, water heater, and laundry equipment, including a 50A 240V circuit and a 30A 240V circuit sized for the connected loads.
  • Equipment disconnects: Added pull-out disconnects for the A/C and water heater to provide safe, code-compliant service shutoff points.
  • Branch circuits and protection: Installed a mix of 15A and 20A breakers, including AFCI protection where required, and updated lighting and receptacle circuits with NM-B 12/2, 14/2, and 10/3 cabling as appropriate.
  • Outlets, fans, and lights: Added a GFCI-protected receptacle where needed, 15 standard outlets, six ceiling fans, and four light fixtures to improve comfort and convenience throughout the home.
  • Smoke detectors: Installed new smoke detection to improve life-safety coverage.
  • Surge protection: Added surge protection at the panel to help shield sensitive electronics and appliances from voltage spikes.
  • Permits and utility coordination: Scheduled the utility service drop, pulled permits, and arranged inspections. Temporary generator power was available during the outage to reduce disruption.

Materials and Code Upgrades

To ensure a robust and future-ready installation, our Raleigh team used appropriately sized NM-B Romex and SER cabling for 15A, 20A, 30A, and 50A circuits; installed standard and AFCI breakers per current code; and added equipment disconnects for safe maintenance. Grounding and bonding were verified at the new indoor panel and service equipment, and circuits were clearly labeled for fast troubleshooting. Approximately 800 square feet of targeted rewiring ensured legacy wiring was updated where needed.

Why Move the Panel Indoors?

  • Protection from the elements: Indoor placement reduces moisture, heat, and UV exposure that can prematurely age components.
  • Easier access: Homeowners and technicians can safely access breakers year-round, improving safety and convenience.
  • Future capacity: The new 200A panel and labeled circuits make future additions—like EV chargers or kitchen upgrades—straightforward.

Results for the Homeowner

The Southern Pines home now benefits from a safer, cleaner, and more organized electrical system. Dedicated appliance circuits reduce nuisance trips, AFCI/GFCI protection improves safety, and new lighting and fans enhance everyday comfort. With utility and inspection logistics handled by Touchstone Electric, the upgrade process was streamlined from start to finish.
