Touchstone Electric’s Charlotte branch, based in Matthews, recently completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project for Sealing Agents in Fletcher, NC. Led by technician Brad Anderson, this job focused on a safe, code-compliant path to increase reliability and capacity: installing new 2-inch EMT conduit, pulling a 2/0 THHN feeder to exterior panels, replacing the main breaker, and performing a thorough panel rejuvenation on two panels. Completed on December 10, 2024, the work enhances safety, performance, and future scalability for the property’s electrical system.

Project overview: Electrical panel upgrade and feeder install

Our team installed rigid, weather-ready 2-inch EMT conduit and pulled approximately 80 feet of 2/0 THHN feeder conductors to supply the exterior panels with dependable capacity. To ensure proper protection and alignment with the panel’s rating, we replaced the main two-pole breaker. We then completed a two-panel rejuvenation to restore safe operation and extend service life.

  • Feeder upgrade (2/0 THHN): Sized for robust, efficient power delivery to main and subpanels, reducing voltage drop and improving reliability under load.
  • 2-inch EMT conduit: Secure, professionally mounted runs with connectors and fittings appropriate for exterior use and clean service entrances.
  • Main breaker replacement: A properly matched, two-pole main breaker that safeguards downstream circuits and aligns with the panel’s amperage rating.
  • Panel rejuvenation (two panels): Vacuum/clean, re-torque connections, verify ground/neutral separation with one conductor per lug, seal openings, check for water intrusion, confirm correct utility voltage, apply antioxidant where needed, and test AFCI/GFCI operation with customer consent.

Safety-first details that make a difference

Beyond installing new materials, our rejuvenation process targets the issues that commonly cause nuisance tripping, overheating, and premature equipment wear. By tightening terminations, ensuring proper bonding and grounding, and sealing unused knockouts, we help prevent arcing and moisture ingress—two of the leading causes of panel damage. Verifying voltage and testing protection devices (with consent) provide added peace of mind that the system is operating as intended.

The result is a neater, safer panel environment, improved conductor integrity thanks to antioxidant application on aluminum where applicable, and a clearly organized layout that makes future service or expansion simpler and faster.

When to consider a panel or feeder upgrade

  • Frequent breaker trips, flickering lights, or warm panel covers
  • Adding EV charging, HVAC upgrades, or new high-demand equipment
  • Evidence of corrosion, water intrusion, or damaged conductors
  • Original or outdated main breaker and limited panel capacity
  • Mixed grounds/neutrals or multiple conductors under one lug
