Electrical Panel Upgrade, AFCI Breakers & Pool Circuit in Raleigh, NC

Our Raleigh team completed a comprehensive Panels & Service Upgrades project for homeowner Bruce Henson on April 22, 2024. Led by technician Patrick Burke, this job replaced an aging 150-amp indoor main panel, added AFCI protection to key living areas, and installed new dedicated circuits powering a pool heater and a backyard shed. All work included permitting and coordination for inspection in Raleigh, NC.

What we upgraded

  • 150-Amp Indoor Main Panel Replacement: Removed the outdated panel and installed a new 150A aluminum indoor panel. We properly grounded and bonded the enclosure, reconnected the service entrance conductors, and neatly reconnected existing branch circuits. The new panel was fully labeled for clarity and maintenance.
  • Built-in Surge Protection: The panel package included a whole-home surge protector with $25k warranty coverage for added peace of mind against voltage spikes.
  • AFCI Breakers (6 x 20A): Added Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter protection for the dining room, hallway/foyer, and kitchen receptacles not near sinks or countertops, bringing living areas up to current electrical code for enhanced fire safety.
  • New Dedicated Circuits: Ran new circuits from the upgraded panel to serve a pool heater and a shed, using appropriately sized NM-B cable and breakers to match the equipment loads and comply with code.
  • 30A Double-Pole Breaker and GFCI Protection: Installed a 30-amp double-pole breaker for 240V needs and a 30-amp GFCI double-pole breaker where protection is required by code for equipment safety.
  • Maintenance Disconnect (30A): Added a dedicated equipment disconnect to provide a safe, code-compliant shutoff point for servicing.
  • New Branch-Circuit Wiring: Pulled approximately 60 ft of 12/2 NM-B for 20A circuits and 40 ft of 10/3 NM-B for 30A, 240V circuits. We included any necessary junction boxes and ensured proper terminations and support.

Why this upgrade matters

Upgrading to a modern electrical panel improves reliability, safety, and serviceability for today’s power demands. With AFCI protection in living spaces and GFCI protection where required, the home in Raleigh is better protected against arc faults and shock hazards. Dedicated circuits for the pool heater and shed reduce the risk of nuisance tripping and ensure equipment runs as intended.

As part of our Electrical Panel Upgrades service in Raleigh, NC, we handle permitting and inspection, clearly label all circuits, and verify grounding and bonding to meet current code requirements.
