Project overview: electrical panel replacement and surge protection in Nashville, NC
Our Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive panel upgrade in Nashville, NC on February 27, 2026. Led by technician Cody Perry, this project replaced an aging 150-amp main panel, added whole-home surge protection, updated breakers to meet current code requirements, and handled the permitting and inspection process from start to finish. What we did
- Permitting and inspection: Pulled the required electrical permit and coordinated inspection for a compliant, worry-free upgrade.
- Main electrical panel upgrade (150A, indoor): Installed a new aluminum-bus panel with a 20-year transferable panel warranty. The panel was grounded and bonded, the service entrance cable was reconnected, and all circuits were clearly labeled. The installation brought the service equipment up to current electrical code for improved safety and reliability.
- Whole-home surge protection: Installed a surge protection system with $10,000 connected-equipment coverage and a 3-year warranty to help defend sensitive electronics and major appliances against voltage spikes.
- Breaker updates and configurations: Installed and configured breakers to align with current standards and the home’s loads:
- 2 × 50A standard breakers — for common loads such as a range, furnace/heater, small subpanel, or EV charger
- 3 × 30A standard (double-pole) breakers — for typical loads like a dryer, water heater, air condenser, spa, or EV charger
- 7 × 20A standard breakers — often used for small appliance branch circuits
- 3 × 15A standard breakers — for lighting and general-purpose branch circuits (2020 code considerations included)
- 1 × 15A GFCI breaker — serving areas such as kitchen receptacles, exterior/outside locations, crawl spaces, basements, and garage lighting (not receptacles)
- Temporary power and safety: Power was safely disconnected for the panel changeover, and we provided a generator for limited power usage during the outage to minimize disruption.
Code readiness and AFCI notes
As local inspectors continue implementing the 2020 NEC, certain circuits may require AFCI upgrades. Installing AFCI protection can reveal preexisting wiring issues (such as shared neutrals) that may cause immediate tripping. In such cases, diagnosing and correcting the condition can involve tracing and opening devices on the affected circuits. Our team explained these considerations to the homeowner and is prepared to assist with any future AFCI requirements the inspector may request.
