On August 14, 2026, Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed an electrical panel rejuvenation for Kim Waack. Lead technician Brad Williams corrected objectionable current by separating neutrals and grounds in the load center located beside the home’s Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). This targeted repair improved safety, reduced nuisance current on metal components, and brought the installation in line with current electrical code expectations.
What Was Happening and Why It Matters
In Raleigh homes with standby power, panels located downstream of an ATS must have the neutral conductors isolated from equipment grounding conductors. When neutrals and grounds share a bar or bonding point in a subpanel, return current can travel on unintended metal paths. This condition—commonly called “objectionable current”—can create tingling sensations on metal surfaces, cause unpredictable GFCI/AFCI behavior, and introduce generator performance issues.
By addressing the neutral–ground relationship in the panel adjacent to the ATS, we helped ensure fault currents clear safely and that normal neutral current stays on the proper conductor, not on the equipment grounding system.
Work Performed Near the ATS
- Separated neutral conductors from equipment grounding conductors in the panel next to the ATS.
- Ensured the neutral bus is isolated from the panel enclosure as required for a subpanel configuration.
- Confirmed bonding occurs only at the correct location upstream of the ATS per modern code practice.
