Project overview
Touchstone Electric completed an Electrical Panel Rejuvenation and basement wiring repairs for homeowner Cindy Kamholtz in Lawndale, NC. On December 3, 2025, our Charlotte team from the Matthews branch, led by technician Christian Cedillos, addressed safety issues in the basement and tuned up the outdoor electrical panel to enhance reliability and code compliance.
Safety issues we resolved
- Secured open splices in the basement: Conductors were placed in proper junction boxes with covers to enclose and protect all splices.
- Grounded metal boxes: Ensured all metal boxes were correctly bonded to the equipment grounding conductor.
- Verified proper connectors: Confirmed every cable and conduit entering a box used the appropriate listed connector to protect insulation and prevent strain on conductors.
- Panel connectors and terminations: Installed proper connectors at the outdoor electrical panel and safely capped an unused wire within the panel.
- Panel Rejuvenation service: Vacuumed and cleaned the panel interior; re-tensioned loose lugs and breaker terminals; verified that neutrals and grounds are separated with only one conductor per lug; inspected for water intrusion and resealed openings; confirmed correct service voltage; applied antioxidant on conductors where appropriate; and, with the customer’s consent, tested AFCI and GFCI breakers for proper operation.
In total, we performed a comprehensive panel tune-up and completed eight custom cleanup tasks throughout the basement to eliminate hazards and tidy up the wiring.
Why this work matters
Open splices, ungrounded metal boxes, and loose panel lugs can lead to arcing, nuisance breaker trips, and shock risks. Likewise, missing connectors and unsealed panel openings can damage insulation, invite moisture or critters, and compromise the electrical system over time. By enclosing splices, bonding metallic boxes, using the right connectors, and tightening terminations, we lowered fire risk and improved overall system performance for this Lawndale home.
Our step-by-step approach
- Assessment and testing: We began with a visual inspection and safety check, confirming conductor conditions, torqueing requirements, and service voltage to the panel.
- Basement wiring cleanup: All open splice points were moved into properly sized junction boxes with covers, metal boxes were grounded, and correct connectors were added to protect and secure entries.
- Panel Rejuvenation: The panel was vacuumed and cleaned, terminations were re-tensioned, neutral and ground bar configuration was verified, and openings were resealed to help prevent water intrusion.
- Protective measures: Antioxidant was applied where needed, an unused wire was safely capped, and with the homeowner’s consent, AFCI and GFCI breakers were function-tested.
- Final verification: All covers were reinstalled, work areas were left clean, and the system was checked for consistent operation.
