Whole-Home Surge Protection and Grounding Upgrade in Durham, NC

Touchstone Electric’s Raleigh branch completed a comprehensive electrical safety upgrade for homeowner Theo Roddy in Durham, NC. On October 13, 2025, our technician Francisco Martinez installed a whole-house surge protection system and upgraded the home’s grounding electrode system to meet modern safety requirements. This project falls under our Panels & Service Upgrades and Whole-House Surge Protection services.

Project Highlights

  • Installed a $10,000 / 3-year whole-home surge protector at the main electrical panel.
  • Upgraded the grounding electrode system with a new ground rod and a continuous grounding electrode conductor (GEC) to the main service panel.
  • Included our Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty on workmanship.
  • Completed by our Raleigh team for a homeowner in Durham, NC.

Why This Upgrade Matters

Power surges can come from lightning activity, utility grid fluctuations, or large household equipment cycling on and off. A properly installed whole-house surge protective device helps divert excess voltage safely to ground, shielding your home’s wiring, breakers, receptacles, and connected appliances from damaging spikes.

Pairing surge protection with a robust, modernized grounding system provides a clear path to ground for unwanted energy. This combination supports safer performance of your electrical system, helps extend the life of sensitive electronics and appliances, and aligns the home with today’s safety expectations.

What We Did for This Durham Home

  • Whole-Home Surge Protection: Installed a surge protective device at the main service panel to intercept surges and route them to ground, helping protect covered appliances and electrical components throughout the home.
  • Grounding Electrode System Upgrade: Drove a new ground rod (typically about 8 ft) and replaced the grounding electrode conductor with a continuous run to the main service panel. The scope included up to approximately 25 ft of GEC routing with secure terminations for reliable performance.

Our Raleigh branch team took care to deliver clean, code-conscious workmanship so the home’s electrical service is safer and better prepared to handle transient voltage events.

Warranty and Coverage Summary

  • Surge Protector Coverage: Includes $10,000 in appliance coverage for 3 years in the unlikely event of device failure. All claims are secondary to the homeowner’s existing insurance, and direct lightning strikes are excluded.
  • Covered Equipment Includes: Washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, indoor HVAC unit, trash compactor, dishwasher, garbage disposal, stove, wiring, outlets/switches, electrical system components (including breakers), and hardwired devices such as built-in microwaves, furnace, air handlers, evaporator coils, hardwired ranges, landscape lighting, and home lighting (when protected with a properly connected Boltshield SPD).
  • Exclusions: Security systems and medical equipment are not covered.
  • Craftsmanship: Touchstone Electric’s Signature Lifetime Craftsmanship Warranty applies to our installation workmanship.

These protections work together to deliver practical, real-world peace of mind for homeowners looking to safeguard their electrical systems and major appliances.
